Fasten your seat belts ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Baseball
After opening up the 2022-23 season winning 2 of their first 3, Hobart looked to build on their hot start with 3 more games this past week!
On Monday, the Brickies hosted Westville in non-conference action. Our boys got on the board with a 2-run first inning, but the Blackhawks answered with 1 of their own in the 2nd to make it a 2-1 game. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Brickie bats warmed up to the tune of 4 RUNS and Hobart cruised the rest of the way to a 9-2 VICTORY!! Junior Nick Sobczynski, senior Jake Jenkins, and sophomore Jayme Hairston had two hits apiece and freshman Zach Terek made his high school debut on the mound by striking out 10 batters in just 4 innings of work in the win!
Wednesday, Illiana Christian was scheduled to host the Brickies, but storms caused the game to be moved to Purdue Northwest where it could be played on the turf! Illiana, the defending IHSAA Class 2A State Champions, entered the contest ranked #4 in the area and 1-0 on the year. The Vikings jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings of play and were able to hold our boys scoreless until the final inning when Hobart was able to plate two runs. Over the final 5 innings, the Brickies played Illiana to a 2-2 tie, but the damage had been done and Hobart lost a tough one 8-2 against one of the area's top teams. Sobczynski again had two hits and drove in Hobart's lone RBI. Junior Jevan Andrews walked twice and recorded two stolen bases and sophomore Drew Burris came on in relief to pitch 5 innings of scoreless baseball in the loss.
Hobart is now 4-2 on the year and will open up NCC play on Monday against the Lowell Red Devils at home. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

Softball
On Monday, Hobart hit the road for Michigan City to face the Wolves. The Brickies DOMINATED the contest from the start and SHINED BRIGHT on the DIAMOND in the 15-4 VICTORY! Sophomore Emili Knestrict went 3-for-4 and drove in 6 runs ... classmate Taylor Lopez and junior Keirys Click also had 3 hits each ... and Alyssa Janik hit her 2nd homerun of the season as our girls belted out 17 hits to cruise to their 3rd straight win to open the season!! Three Hobart pitchers ... sophomore Addisyn Johnson, senior Cierra Huitron & sophomore Elizabeth Crespo ... kept City off-balance at the plate all night in the win!
Tuesday, the Brickies were once again on the road, but this time it was a short bus ride over to Porter County neighbor and preseason #7-ranked Wheeler. Our girls picked up right where they left off on Monday - EXPLODING for 7 runs in the first two innings and tacking on 3 more over the next 3 to earn a DECISIVE 10-0 VICTORY!! WOW!! Junior pitcher Morgan Ellenberger was RIDICULOUS in the circle as she tossed a NO-HITTER while striking out 11 batters!! Ellenberger also had 2 hits and 4 RBI to help her own cause at the plate! Matching Morgan with 2 hits each were Click, sophomore Indy Parkerson, and Janik, who BELTED her 3rd HOMERUN of the season right off the Bearcats' new scoreboard!!
On Thursday, Hobart finally returned home for the Northwest Crossroads Conference opener against pre-season #9-ranked Kankakee Valley ... and it was a BARN-BURNER! KV took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Bricks tied it up in the bottom of the 3rd! In the 5th, the Kougars got a 2-run homer to gain a 3-1 advantage. Hobart BATTLED back in a run in the 6th to cut the deficit to just 3-2, but KV was able to hold on in the 7th and leave town with a big win.
Friday, Hobart traveled back to Porter County to play #4-ranked Boone Grove. Unfortunately, these Wolves were totally different than the ones our girls faced on Monday and they sent the Brickies home with a lopsided 15-2 loss. Boone scored 10 in the bottom of the 1st and Hobart had trouble getting anything going on offense against one of the top pitchers in the area. A bright spot for the Bricks came from sophomore Ladan Weinman, who clobbered a 2-run homerun in the top of the 5th to account for Hobart's final tally.
The Brickies are 4-2 on the season and have another busy week ahead with 4 more games!! YOU'VE GOT THIS GIRLS - LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!

Track & Field
The Brickie Track & Field teams began practice WAAAYYYYYY back on February 13th ... and after a few indoor tune-ups, they finally got outside for some racing!
On Thursday, Hobart hosted both Portage and Wheeler for a coed double-dual meet at The Brickyard! For the girls, junior Cailey Weber was a double-winner placing first in both the 100 & 300m hurdle races ... freshman Cassie Cohen joined her by winning the 1600m & 3200m! Senior Daeges Morgan (high jump) and sophomore Taylor Pope (shot put) also took first for the Brickies in individual events!! On the boys side of things, the Bricks got first place finishes from senior Cody Johnston (pole vault), classmate Diego Verduzco (shot put & discus), and the 3200m relay team consisting of juniors Ryan Mattel, Carson Bell & Quentin Stengel and freshman Durgon Click! In the 1600m run, it was a CLEAN SWEEP for Hobart as sophomore Felix Lopez finished 1st, classmate Kolin Gladney was 2nd and junior Owen Stankich placed 3rd!!
Overall it was a GREAT start to the outdoor season for our Brickie tracksters!! Both the boys & girls earned a split on the scoreboard ... defeating Wheeler and falling to Portage.
