SHES Weekly UPDATE
Week of February 19-23, 2018
SCHOOL SAFETY @ SHES...
In light of the most recent school event in Parkland, Florida that still continues to leave us asking "Why?", I want to say thank you for your patience and understanding as we follow appropriate protocol when allowing visitors to enter our school. The entrance most often used, is the front entrance with the intercom/video system. You should always expect to show your photo ID (stand on the paw print in front of the camera). Once you enter the front office, our job to protect and keep our students safe is not done. Should you wish to visit an alternate location in the building, we request that you provide us with your photo ID again in exchange for a visitor's badge (sticker) that you must wear in a prominent location for all to see. You will also be asked to show your photo ID again if you are picking up any students (even though you are simply waiting for the student(s) to come to the front office to leave with you). We thank you for understanding that sometimes these policies and procedures may cause a slight delay in your plans but our number one priority is always the safety of our students, staff and of course any visitors that we may have during the school day.
At Signal Hill Elementary, student safety is our number one priority even over student learning which happens to be a very close second! They actually go hand in hand. We are all in this together so I respectfully request that should you ever notice anything that you feel needs to come to the attention of our administration, I encourage you to call our front office staff immediately at 703-530-7541. This is the fastest way to get information to our school if there is a safety concern. Please also feel free to email me at webbcm@pwcs.edu and Ms. Owens, Assistant Principal at owensad@pwcs.edu.
All PWCS participate in required safety drills and one of them is a lock-down drill which has received a lot of attention in the media recently. I encourage you to talk with your child(ren) at home because you know your child the best. Perhaps discussing why your child(ren) think we have lock-down drills is a good place to begin and then move onto how they might feel when we practice our lock-down drills. It is very important that they understand that we do this to KEEP THEM SAFE! Please remember that there is a fine line between too much information and too little information and that the age of your child matters greatly as to what type of discussion you have at home. You may need to have different discussions based on your family's needs. You may decide that it is best not to discuss this at all. Most importantly, we don't want to scare our children or make them afraid to come to school! We do however want them to know that our number one priority is keeping everyone safe!
Thank you for being our partners in education by supporting student learning and helping us keep our children safe!
Very Respectfully,
Carrie Webb and Ashlee Owens
