CES Weekly Update!

Where Caring and Learning Go Hand in Hand
Principal's Message
We hope you had a wonderful short week! It is hard to believe that we are getting ready to enter June, our last official month of the school year! Today was supposed to be our annual field day, which is always one of the many highlights of our year. Typically during this day, at any given time you can look out into the crowd and see hundreds of smiling faces! Students would normally participate in a host of events and even get to see some of their Concord teachers get slimed!!! Although we are sad we could not celebrate in person we still wanted to provide you with a little sliming entertainment. Click here to see Mr. Carroll or click here to see Dr. Penning get slimed! Additionally this week, we are thrilled to congratulate our Young Authors who are listed below! We are so excited about our online auction that will be starting next week! We already have some early raffle winners! Take a look below to see who won the Nintendo Switch! Lastly, as we prepare for the pick up of student materials, we anticipate that many of our teachers will be here on June 8th and June 9th. We know that your little ones would probably love to get one final hug from their teachers, but we respectfully ask that you remain in your car during the drive-thru and wave from an appropriate distance. We will continue to update you next week with more details. We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Please continue to reach out to us. We are always here for you.

2nd Grade Send Off
2020 Second Grade Send-Off
Dear Second Grade Parents,
The Second Grade Send-Off is a special tradition that our 2nd graders usually get to enjoy as they celebrate the end of their time at Concord Elementary. Due to current circumstances, this event will look very different this year. But we still want to celebrate our wonderful 2nd graders and give them the opportunity to participate in some of the meaningful traditions. In June, Dr. Penning will send out a digital copy of the Class of 2030 Video for you and your families to enjoy. We will also be gathering materials so that we can put together their Class Time Capsule. We hope that participating in these activities will help the children feel special and connected to their friends and classmates!
At this time, we are asking you to write a letter to your child to be placed in the “Class of 2030 Time Capsule.” The Time Capsule will be opened the night of your child’s Senior Prom. In order for us to accommodate all of the classroom symbolic items as well as over 200 letters in the Time Capsule, we are requesting that the letters be written or typed on 8 ½ x 11 paper and placed in a letter-sized envelope. You may include a few photos in the letter-sized envelope, if you choose.
We are also asking that you have your child fill out the attached “Second Grade Send-Off Survey.” This survey should also be included in the envelope with the letter that you write to your child. On the outside of the sealed envelope, please write “Second Grade Send-Off” and your child’s full name.
You can mail or drop off your letter and student survey to the address below. We will gather the letters together now and create the actual Time Capsule at a later date.
Mail or drop off to:

Elementary iPad Program for 2020-2021 School Year
Elementary iPad Program for 2020-2021 School Year
All K-5 students will receive an iPad this summer to use at school and at home. In order for your child to receive his/her iPad, a parent/guardian must sign off on Garnet Valley’s Acceptable Use Policy, iPad Care, and decide if they would like to purchase insurance for the device. All parents must complete this process for their child to receive an iPad.
There is NO charge for this iPad. However, if parents would like to purchase insurance for accidental damages, they can now do so. So that we can offer families the lowest possible rate, Garnet Valley has partnered with Edvative, an educational non-profit, to assist with this program.
This program is optional and offered to Garnet Valley families who want the peace of mind of having their child’s iPad insured for accidental damages for the 2020-2021 school year.
Kindergarten Snack Program
Thank you for those who participated in the Kindergarten snack program for the 2019-2020 school year. Due to the unseen circumstance of our school year ending early, we will be crediting back $35.00 to all students that participated in the program. The funds will be place into the student’s Food Service account. The funds will be available for the student to use in the cafeteria when they return to school.
Any questions please email Stephen Wanczyk at wanczys@garnetvalley.org
Thank you,
Stephen Wanczyk

Garnet Valley School District
3rd Trimester Progress Reports
Garnet Valley School District is committed to the academic, social, and emotional learning of our students. Through our online learning platforms, teachers are providing qualitative feedback regularly to students on the work they complete. We know students, parents, and teachers are working hard as they engage in and provide a supportive online learning environment. Yet during this unprecedented time, we understand that stress, differences in resources, and the varying online learning readiness of our children all impact student performance. Given the impact of these factors, while also choosing to support a child’s learning, not performance, grades at the elementary level would not be an accurate measure of competency at this time and will not be issued on the standardized progress report. On the progress report, the feature N/A is indicative that skills cannot be accurately measured at this time and are instead being addressed through the direct feedback provided by your child’s teachers in Seesaw and Schoology. As we move forward with the academic year, students will be expected to complete weekly assignments and teachers will continue to provide supportive, qualitative feedback through the online learning platforms. At the close of the third trimester, you will have the ability to download a .zip archive of your child’s Seesaw journal and will have access to your child’s course(s) in Schoology. Kindergarten parents will receive a written statement on their child's progress report that synthesizes the journey through kindergarten and how to continue and support the learning process.

Attendance During Online Instruction
Attendance will be reported on a weekly basis. A student in grades K-5 will be considered present when a completed parental verification of attendance is received. The form will be emailed on a weekly basis to parents. For example, a form will be emailed to you on Monday, April 6th to confirm attendance for the week of March 30th to April 3rd. This verification form includes a space for you to indicate a reason for the missed days of “school.”
