RECAP: Kindness Week
Kindness Week was October 22nd through the 26th. At Sunflower we know kindness is not a one-time project, it is a way of life. During Kindness Week, we put even greater emphasis on acts of kindness that we will then carry out through the year. Here are some activities:
· Kind notes from students to staff;
· Kindness Bingo helped us to lead with value and build class community;
· My Life Plan positive affirmations to help students know their value and celebrate their uniqueness;
· Sunflower students hosted an appreciation lunch on Friday the 26th for all Paola Police Officers and Miami County Sheriff Deputies.
We also enjoyed a Minute It To Win It Cops vs Kids Olympics! Bringing home the Gold was our very own 5th grader, Garrett Graham! Silver was won by Officer Hale and Bronze was won by Detective Douglas.
Etiquette Award
Mrs. Bowman's class won the first Assembly Etiquette Award for the 2018-2019 school year. Great job students!
RECAP: Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all of the parents who came to Parent Teacher Conferences on October 18 and 19th. We had a great turnout.
Things to do to keep students on track:
1. Check for homework each night;
2. Ask your child to participate in class;
3. Make sure your child gets adequate rest;
4. Inquire regularly about how your child feels about school;
5. Be aware of your child's strongest and weakest subjects.
Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year.
THANK YOU to the PTO for providing breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the staff. DELISH!
Mrs. Pennington's 5th Grade Class Field Trips
On October 10th, they visited the Native American exhibit at the Miami County Museum. The students are currently learning about The First Americans in social studies. This was a great learning experience as it brought information to life for the students. After that, they went over to volunteer their time and energy to help the Master Gardeners prepare the south lawn of the Miami County Courthouse for their fall display. Students worked closely with the Master Gardeners learning to prune, pull, plant, and decorate the garden areas. The students loved the experience and so did the Master Gardeners as the class has been asked back for the spring clean up and planting. This was part of the Sunflower Civic Engagement Projects. Students were able to experience the Mindset of Live to Give.
They’ve also took 2 virtual field trips via Skype. They visited with a National Park Ranger from Wind Cave in South Carolina and the Education Historian from Virginia Museum of History and Culture. Both sessions gave students a chance to learn about areas that Native Americans called home. The Virginia Museum shared many artifacts and information about the Powhatan Indians specifically.

Coming Soon to Sunflower!
The One School One Book project! During the month of January, every student and Sunflower staff member will receive a book which will be read together. The goal of this project is simple; to share a story with family and community. By doing this; it will encourage conversations, build and strengthen relationships, and instill a love of reading in our youth. What book will we be reading? You will have to wait until January to find out!
