Green Schools- Evergreen Distinction
We are thrilled to announce that our school has been approved and certified as an Evergreen school (with 20 points!), the highest honor in the Michigan Green Schools program. This achievement recognizes our school's ongoing commitment to promoting a culture of environmental awareness among our students, staff, and community.
This certification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our school community, including our students, families, teachers, and staff, who have all played a vital role in making our school a greener and more sustainable place. It also demonstrates our school's commitment to creating a better future for our planet and for generations to come.
We are proud to be recognized as an Evergreen school and look forward to continuing our efforts to promote sustainability and environmental awareness in our community. Thank you to our Green School Committee for making this possible which includes Mrs. Thorington, Mr. Budziak, Mr. Stanton, Mrs. Mulka, and Mrs. Kelly!!

Down Syndrome Awareness Spirit Day- Tuesday, March 21st.
We are excited to announce that on March 21st, Weiss will be participating in a "mismatched sock day" to show our support for World Down Syndrome Day.
As you may know, Down Syndrome is caused by an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, giving someone with DS three copies of this chromosome instead of the typical number of two. Therefore, World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st (3/21) to signify the three copies of the 21st chromosome.
So why mismatched socks? There are several reasons for this. Firstly, when looking at a karyotype, the chromosomes look like paired socks, and the staining makes them look striped. Some folks even wear an extra sock to represent the extra chromosome. Secondly, wearing mismatched socks promotes the celebration of differences, pointing out that we are more alike than different. Lastly, crazy socks get attention, allowing for a discussion about DS, differences, acceptance, and hope.
This day is especially meaningful to siblings of those with DS who can show their love and support for their brother or sister and feel the support of others who join in with their socks. Plus, it's an easy way for everyone to participate, as who doesn't have a pair of mismatched socks lying around?
I hope you will join us in showing our support for the Down Syndrome community by wearing mismatched socks on March 21st. Let's celebrate differences and promote acceptance together.
Imagination Station
Imagination Station Field Trip
Dear Parent or Guardian,
On April 19, 2023 All of the classes at Weiss Elementary will be traveling to the Imagination Station in Toledo, Ohio. Students will be exploring 250 hands-on-exhibits.
Due to limited space, we are not allowed to have chaperones riding the bus. Others interested in attending are more than welcome to drive themselves and follow the bus.
The cost of the trip is 8 dollars per person to cover the cost of admission. If you are a member at Imagination Station, your admission will be covered with your membership number(This must be sent to the school at least 2 weeks ahead of the trip). Students will also be responsible for packing a sack lunch with a drink or getting a bagged lunch from the school cafeteria prior to leaving on the trip. Only families that complete a school lunch from ahead of time will get this lunch (This form will be sent closer to the field trip date). The lunches will be stored in a large bin until time for lunch. Your child may bring money to purchase souvenirs, but it will be their responsibility to keep track of it.
As a STEM school this is a great opportunity for students to explore, build, and see how science, engineering, math, and technology can be used to solve problems in the world.
Thank you,
Weiss Staff

Bingo for Books/ Literacy Night at Downriver STEM at Weiss
Weiss is thrilled to share that our recent Bingo for Books/Literacy Night event was a resounding success! We had a great turnout, with approximately 200 people in attendance, all eager to participate in a fun-filled evening of games, prizes, and literacy strategies.
As a Title 1 school, our Weiss staff understands importance of promoting literacy and providing resources to our families. That's why we made sure that every child who attended the event walked away with at least 6 books, and every family received a wealth of literacy strategies to support reading and writing at home. All families that were unable to attend, will also receive books, resources, and strategies to go home with their child before Spring Break.
Weiss would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our PTO for providing all the books used as prizes, and our food service team for providing a delicious meal. We would also like to thank all the staff members who volunteered their time and expertise to make this event a success. Their contributions did not go unnoticed.
Finally, we would like to give a special shout-out to Mrs. Pidgeon, Mrs. Bongiorno, and Mrs. Fleming for their outstanding leadership and organization of this event. It was truly a joy to see so many families engaged in promoting literacy and having fun at the same time.
K.I.S.S. Breakfast (Cancelled)
