Cider Pressing Party
Apples, apples, and more apples!
Cider Party
WHO: You and whomever you choose.
WHAT: Apples and food and drink to share. Potluck! Pizza toppings and soup ingredients are always good. Did we say apples? Apples! Apples! Also, bring containers for taking cider home. Wild apples make the tastiest cider.
There are essentially no apples here in Johnson and it’s looking pretty lean in many places. In addition to gathering plenty on your own, if you’re in a good apple spot, please let Carl or Mark know. If you were here last year, you’ll remember the resurrection of the Bennett cider mill, the hit-and-miss engine firing away and the crumbling of the rotted timber on the press. Voila! Howard has now rebuilt the press. The engine could be heard running nearly a month in advance of the party. We’re ready, but we’ll need apples to feed this beast. Those seeking a small-batch cider will continue to be able to utilize the smaller grinder and press. As always, we’re certain to have a cauldron of stone soup so bring some ingredients from your garden or freezer. The pizza oven should be cranking. We’ll have the dough and sauce to match with the toppings of your choice. Variety is good--bring a potluck dish!
DIRECTIONS: Take Rte 15 to Johnson. If coming from the east, turn right at the Masonic Temple (church-like building with clock tower) and head straight up the hill about 3 miles. Turn left on Swamp Road and then right on Codding Hollow Road. You can park in the pasture on the right.
