Fulton Science Academy
EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of December 4, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
Welcome back to another week here at FSA. I want to begin by saying that our Open House was a huge success and it was wonderful to meet so many prospective families! Thank you to all of our student volunteers who were ambassadors for our school! You did an amazing job representing our school and our student body! In fact, this particular group of Student Ambassadors was the best group of Ambassadors that we have had, yet. Your willingness to guide and inform so many different families about our school speaks volumes to your character and it is so very much appreciated by everyone in our FSA family! I also want to thank our wonderful parents who participated in the Parent Panel. You were a fantastic representation of our FSA family as well. It is so nice to see a collaborative effort come together in such a great way.
I want to congratulate a few of our Academic Teams on their success over the weekend as well! As most of you may know, we hosted the 2017 - 2018 FLL Regional Tournament on Saturday December 2nd! I want to congratulate our 4th Grade Robotics Team on their awards for both the Best Robot Performance Award and the Championship Award! They also advanced to Super Regionals! Second, I would like to congratulate our Science Olympiad Team on their achievements at the Bearden Science Olympiad Invitational in Tennessee over the weekend. FSA came in 2nd place overall, just 1 point shy of 1st place! And lastly, I would like to congratulate our Math Olympiad Team on their achievements at the 18th Lassiter High School Math Tournament. FSA placed 3rd as a team at the Varsity Level against 12th graders! You can read more details about these events below! It was an exciting weekend and it will only continue as we move through the rest of the year!
Good luck to our Boys Basketball Team on their Home Game tomorrow night (12/5) at 5:00 pm against North Atlanta Christian Flight!
As we inch closer to our Winter Break, please be reminded that we have some important dates continuing and coming up.
Our Winter MAP Testing is continuing over the next couple of weeks. With this, I would like to remind parents that in order to have your child perform to their best ability, they need to be well rested and have a healthy breakfast in the morning before they come for testing. With this being said, if your student is sick and needs to miss testing, their test can be rescheduled so that they are able to get the most accurate result. You can see a detailed schedule of the MAP Testing below in the calendar. The testing began on Wednesday, November 29 and will continue until Thursday, December 14. I am very confident that we can again achieve impressive scores from all of our students!
Lost and Found Reminder
I want to inform all parents that there are a number of items in our Lost and Found that I am sure many of you are missing. Please come at your earliest convenience to look through our Lost and Found if you believe you are missing anything. Anything that is left by Winter Break will be donated to charity!
Annual Fundraising Campaign
Our Annual Fundraising has begun! In a continuous effort to keep our tuition affordable and our standards high, we use the generous donations from our school community to help our students achieve their academic goals and dreams by developing their interests and talents. You can CLICK HERE to read more about our fundraising and donations. Please join our annual fundraising campaign to help Fulton Science Academy to continue to offer the best education possible.
We thank you for being a part of this great story!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK!
STEAM career day speakers needed for December 21st
We have scheduled a whole day STEAM Career Day for students in 8th grade through high school on December 21st.
Each session will be about 20 to 25 minutes. All professions are welcome to present.
If you or someone you know may introduce a profession, please let me know.
Tips on Presenting to Middle and High Students
Make it personal. As you talk about your work, use anecdotes from your own experience. For example:
- Describe how you became interested in your field and how you entered the profession. Use this as a springboard to mention the talents and character traits required for your work.
- Sketch out your working conditions and tell the students what a typical day is like. If they're likely to recognize any of your clients or projects, be sure to mention them.
Make it interactive. Get the kids involved as quickly as possible: ask questions and encourage them to do the same. Asking questions about their exposure to your profession breaks the ice and simultaneously gives you a better feel for your audience.
Make it concrete. Give specific, hands-on examples and use props and audiovisuals whenever you can.
- Display or hand out some sample items as visuals, ideally of things the children may be familiar with.
- Take advantage of the opportunity to discuss the aspects of the technology you use.
- Put photographs, postcards, crafts, or other objects in an album or a protective cover and pass it around the classroom. Items that children can touch are an excellent idea.
Make it fun. Use audiovisuals and/or a game format to keep your presentation lively and interesting.
- Bring age-appropriate translated material and impress them with a brief demonstration.
- Encourage participation by giving prizes for correct answers i.e…stickers, buttons, pencils, pens.
Make it count. Leaving something tangible behind (if possible) will magnify the effect of your visit and ultimately produce a better return on the time and energy you've invested in your presentation. Give the kids souvenirs or treats, and give the teacher a resource handout with pointers to more information on careers. Even a flyer about your job or a brochure on your employer that the students can keep will help them remember you and your talk.

creative writing students complete novels!
Four of my Creative Writing students completed entire novels in November using the platform NaNoWriMo. These students are: Chloe R. (11th Grade), Isabella S. (9th Grade), Halimah B. (10th Grade), and Katarina G. (10th Grade). Chloe's novel is over 50,000 words long!
This is a tremendous feat and something that they will be able to mention in college applications and resumes. We had a small celebration in our class this afternoon to celebrate this achievement!
I love my Creative Writing class and moments like these are why.
:)

middle school SCIENCE OLYMPIAD team places 2nd at Bearden S.O. Invitational
FSA Middle School Science Olympiad students brought home the 2nd place trophy from the Bearden Science Olympiad Invitational in Knoxville, TN. Students and coaches left school Friday afternoon to make the trip to Knoxville. After dinner, students conducted an intense study session/team meeting in the hotel conference room to make final preparations for the tournament.
Saturday morning, students were up early for a quick breakfast and were at the tournament by 7:30 to make the deadline for impounding building devices, find their way around the school, and work out event logistics with their teammates.
“This was the first tournament of the season, so we really didn’t know what to expect,” explained FSA Science Olympiad Head Coach Pam Walsh. “There are 23 different Science Olympiad events, each with its’ own set of rules. Preparing and packing up for a tournament can be a logistical nightmare. In the past, our first tournament has always been held locally. Having an out of state tournament added to our stress level.”
“It’s very hard to predict how students will do at their first tournament,” said head coach Gloria Stathos. “We have a lot of new students and new events. It seems like there is never enough time to work with students. We were hoping to place at least 4th and were thrilled to place 2nd and only two points behind our rivals from Dodgen Middle School.”
The team’s next tournament is this Saturday at Chattahoochee high school where they will compete against 49 teams from Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Character Ed Trait for December is Kindness
I love this saying! Being kind is so easy, yet so rare. It's more than letting a friend borrow a pencil; it's letting them borrow the pencil and offering a pat on the back or words of encouragement. Knowing that others are going through the same things as you makes us feel more human. Acknowledging this to those who are struggling is an act of kindness. Encourage your child to be kind with their words and their actions.
-Mrs. Cantrell
Let's go to costa rica
Students must be 6th grade and up. If you are interested in knowing more about this program, please speak to Mrs. Carmona.
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
