Parent Peek at the Week
Week of April 13th, 2020
Week 1 of Distance Learning is complete!
A HUGE thank you to all the parents and guardians, who supported your children AND teachers in completing week 1 of distance learning. We had (and still have) much to learn - but given the dedication, support and commitment from everyone, it really couldn't have gone much better.
Over the course of the week, we had 250 students online, safely handed out 19 computers for students with special needs, 31 computers for families who needed technology and answered countless numbers of emails and messages to make sure Edsby and Google Classroom were working as best they could. Phew!
I don't really need a reminder of how wonderful our Kawartha Heights community is - but this does reinforce that we are in this together. Please reach out to us as this journey continues - we are here to do whatever we can to make distance learning as successful as possible for all of our families.
As we take time to recognize Passover and Easter for those who celebrate, I wish you all a safe and calm break. We look forward to connecting with you again this week!
Take care of yourself and each other,
Mrs. Sampson
A few images from week 1 of distance learning
We invite you to continue to share your photos of "learning at home". Please share your pictures or stories via Edsby or email with Mrs. Sampson. I will then share them in future "Parent Peek at the Week" posts and on social media. We can't wait to see students' smiling faces and hear the stories of learning from our Kawartha Heights families.
A few little bits of information.....
Updates from the School Board:
Here are a few important updates from Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB - that were also sent to you from Director Leclerc on Friday:
Distance Learning and Student Marks – Here is some current information about June report cards: All elementary students will receive a final report card. In determining marks for the final report card, teachers will use the evaluation information gathered before March 13th. Teachers will also consider work completed during the school closure period that would positively impact marks as part of a fair assessment of learning.
New Student Log-In Portal – A new student portal is available, providing quick access to tools for student learning, all from one place. Students can access links to Edsby, Office 365, D2L, Google Classroom, myBlueprint, our Virtual Library and more. The portal is accessible at: kprweb.kprdsb.ca/students
Non-Digital Resources for Students – As mentioned above, we know there are some students and families in need of non-digital resources for their ongoing learning. Our planning in this area is being finalized and we expect to share information on this process next week.
Access to Schools and Playgrounds – A reminder that access to all school buildings and grounds is completely restricted at this time. We know that school yards are important green spaces in many communities, however these are not currently safe places for children to play. There are concerns about touchpoints on playgrounds, and the need for physical distancing means avoiding public spaces.
A Message from the Lunch Lady
With the announcement of the extended school closure, we will be cancelling the deliveries scheduled up to and including May 1, 2020. We will be notifying parents of the cancellation and parents will be reimbursed for all orders placed up to and including the week ending May 1. Parents will be provided a credit on Lunchbox orders account immediately with the cancellation. For those who would like a refund, we ask parents to contact our team directly to complete the return of funds to their payment card (we do not save payment card information for security purposes).
Please note, our team is available to assist parents with any inquiries or to process a refund during the following times:
Monday - Friday: 10am - 6pm
Saturday & Sunday: 9am - 2pm
In addition, your school’s lunch calendar has been updated to reflect the cancelled delivery dates and all vendors will be contacted.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 1.877.426.6860. We are here and available to support you and your community. We are all in this together.
With thanks,
Melissa

Edsby - Come Together!
As your Principal, I will continue to keep you updated using this tool and we wish to remind families this is a way to keep in touch with all staff by using the messaging system built into Edsby. If you have any difficulty accessing Edsby or your account, please feel free to reach out to me by email or by leaving a phone message at the school and I will do my best to troubleshoot the issues with you.
Below you will find instructions about how to set notifications within Edsby. Please consider setting notifications for the areas you frequently interact with so that you know when updates have been made. We hope this supports our ongoing partnerships with our families. We want to stay in touch with with you!
Tips for Students while Distance Learning
Morning announcements....from a distance!
Each morning at Kawartha Heights, we start our day together with morning announcements and our mindful minute. I've heard from many of you that this is something your children are really missing. Starting this week (exact day yet to be determined), I will be recording and posting daily announcements on our new YouTube Channel:(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJnvOfHWrlCD0s3BqnfOGjQ?view_as=subscriber)
These will also be posted on the banner in Edsby for easy access. I'm learning too - so please bear with me as I get up and running. If there is anything you'd like to see added into the morning announcements, please let me know (and feel free to send in messages, joke of the day, etc.).
Just one more thing....
