An App and a Snack

Next Tuesday will be a teacher's choice week. Please email me with suggestions of apps (or other topics) you would like to learn more about. I will collect responses through Friday and then announce the winning app on Monday!

A big thanks goes out to all of the teachers who came and joined me this week! Thanks Mr. Neely, Mrs. Caudle, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Rigsby, Mrs. Karban, and Ms. Hudgens! We'd love for the rest of you to join us next week!

STEM Scarecrows!

Want to Join in the Fun & Learning?

As we start to think about STEM activities for the year, why start out with the Piedmont Interstate Fair Scarecrow Contest? I now this seems more like art than STEM, but not if you really think about it! The scarecrows must be made of all recycled materials, stand between 4 and 6 feet tall, and be able to stand up or hang on display. If you think about all of the planning, design, and problem solving that will go into building a scarecrow to meet those requirements, this is certainly a STEM activity!

The scarecrows need to be delivered to the fair on October 4 or 5. I will be happy to make a delivery of one scarecrow from each grade level. If more than one class on each grade level makes one, I will get together a group of judges to pick a winner for each. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to teach your students what STEM is and to show off our Chapman Chiefs outside of the building.

Stay tuned next week for more STEM resources to help get you started. And now, for the prize this week. The first 3 people to email me about the STEM scarecrow may come and plunder my STEM materials closet for items to start building you scarecrows!

Also, a HUGE thanks to Mrs. Horton for offering to serve on the STEM planning group - no one else has offered yet :(

Tech Integration Updates

Many of you are already using Tenmarks to integrate technology into your math lessons. If you don't know about Tenmarks, let me show you! If you haven't gotten started yet this year, let me know and I will be happy to help you get your class set up.

Some of you were at An App & A Snack when I shared Edmodo's new Snapshot tool. I am hearing from other educators that there are LOTS of glitches in using this on the iPad app, so let's hold off for now. I will let you know as soon as there is an update to help solve the problems!

And speaking of Edmodo, please let me know if I can help you get started using it this year. A big shout out goes to Mrs. Miller - her kindergartners will turn in their first Edmodo assignments tomorrow!

Interactive Graphic Organizers

The link below is the same link Mrs. Milner shared with some of you recently and Mrs. Falk shared with some of us last year. These are great interactive graphic organizers that can be projected on the Interwrite board OR used on the iPad.

To use them on the iPad, simply have students click on the organizer they want to use, click the share icon, and hit Open in... and then Subtext. The students can type on the organizer while it is in Subtext. When they finish, simply have them take a screenshot to save it.

If you use these often, you might want to have the kids add the link to their home screen for easier access. As always, let me know if I can be of assistance with this.

If you don't already like Chapman's Facebook page, please do! And if you would like your students to be stars on Facebook, just send me photos or videos and I will put them up! Parents love to see thier kids on Facebook! Here's the link:

Digital Citizenship Lessons

Thanks to everyone who has been letting me know about the lessons you are teaching. It really impressed parents at the 5th grade iPad Orientation meeting last night when I was able to tell them that all of the 5th graders have already had 3 digital citizenship lessons this year! Keep up the good work.

If you have not let me know about lessons you have already taught, please do. If you have not taught any lessons yet, you really need to get those scheduled in the next week. Let me know if I can help!

Remember that it is my goal for all of you to be certified digital citizenship educators by Common Sense Media by the end of this year. If you let me know when you teach the lessons, I will know when you are ready to apply for this certification!

Chapman Elementary

As always, I am here to help you integrate technology into your lessons. Please let me know how I can be of assistance.
