Early Years
Jerry Rice was born on October 13, 1962 in Starkville, Mississippi. His dad was a hard-working bricklayer who made Jerry and his brothers work in the summer. He appreciated it later on when he stated, "It taught me the meaning of hard work." He once was ditching school and ran into the assistant principal and he ran as fast as he could. He was later punished but the football coach liked his speed and put him at receiver for the team. He immediately caught attention from college prospects and in 1981 was enrolled to Mississippi Valley State University. During his time in college, he broke 18 Division I-AA records.
