What's Happening This Week?

NWEA: Students will be taking the final round of NWEA testing for this year on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings of this week.

Having a Malala Mindset: As a school, we have been discussing the book, Dear Malala We Stand With You, and learning about Malala Yousafzai. This led to our Hero Biography writing projects and now to a Malala Mindset projects. Our Malala mindset projects will be on display in the halls the week of May 9th - 13th. Students will be touring the building to look at other class/grade level projects over the course of the week. Parents and the public are welcome to come in and view the projects on the evening of May 12th from 4:30 to 6:30. I hope you can attend!

Math Workshop: Geometry projects will be due on Monday. Students will take a picture of their project and use Educreations to narrate. In their narration they will be identifying the different geometric elements that were required.

Reader's Workshop: We will begin our unit on folk and fairy tales. We will listen to some stories read aloud, work with groups to find the traits of a fairy and folk tale, and then begin looking at fractured fairy tales.

Writer's Workshop: Our trial to Night Zookeeper has been extended. Our class has joined the HSE Writing League and are competing with schools around the district to see who can write the most.

Word Study: No word study this week due to the field trip and testing.

Science: We will continue to observe our plants as they grow. We will also be learning more about a plants life cycle.

Library: We make our final trip to the library for the year. All library books are due on Tuesday.

Questions for Reading

It is important for students to not only be able to answer questions about the events in the story, but questions about why the events happened and what decisions the author made. This leads to a deeper understanding of the text. These questions are showing up more and more in class and state assessments. If you would like to make reading at home more meaningful, check out the link below. It is a list of possible questions to ask your child about their book to get them to think about what they've read.
