I Want My Child's Classroom/Schedule Changed
As we begin the 2022-2023 school year, I would like to touch on one of the most common request of a parent to the administration in the first few weeks of school. This request is "I want my child's classroom (course) changed." Allow me to explain a few things. Preparing classroom rosters is a collaborative effort amongst all staff members and administration in the building. This process began in the spring and went well into the summer.
There are many contributing factors that go into creating a classroom roster. For elementary school we look at the personalities of the students and teachers, the involvement level of the families, how many students are receiving exceptional services, how many boys and girls are in the class, the academic levels of the students (for differentiation purposes), which students had a tough time getting along with specific students the previous year, and at times, which students socialize more when they're around specific students. Again, this process took us several weeks to complete.
For middle school, we look at school performance, FSA scores, teacher input, behavioral information, as well as district requirements and the pupil progression system. We will not make any changes in a middle school student's schedule, unless they are in the wrong level of a class. All electives add value and cannot be changed at this time.
Parents and families I just wanted to inform you on the dynamics of creating classrooms and schedules. The requests have a MAJOR domino effect on EVERYTHING. My intent is to share some knowledge of the inner workings of our school and how we plan for the best for all of our students.
Therefore, when you make a request, not only does it affect your child and the teacher's classroom they're moving to, but it also affects the schedule of other students, the schedule of support staff who are providing interventions, the culture of the class, and may have an effect on the teachers schedule itself.
In conclusion, I always suggest to parents to do a few things before requesting for their child's teacher to be changed. Meet with the teacher, understand that students will adapt to multiple teachers with different personalities, this is excellent for social development. Most importantly, understand that we have the same goal and that is for your child to receive a world class education, in a safe and nurturing environment, and for them to reach their full potential.
