June 1914: Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand-
On June 28th 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. The man who killed him was Gavrilo Princip. He is a part of a six man Bosnian Serb assassination squad. The assassination led directly to the First World War.
July 1914: WWI Begins-
On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies--Britain, France, and Russia--to fight in World War I. Under the command of Major General John J. Pershing, more than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought on battlefields in France. Many Americans were not in favor of the U.S. entering the war and wanted to remain neutral. However, the U.S. eventually did enter the war.
May 1915: Sinking Of the Lusitania-
German U-boats sank the British passenger liner Lusitania, among those who drowned were 128 Americans. Here the Los Angeles Tribune reports the attack, and a newspaper advertisement warns ship passengers to travel the Atlantic at there own risk.
April 1917: US enters WWI-
On April 6, two days after the U.S. Senate votes 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the decision by a vote of 373 to 50, and the United States formally enters the First World War.
November 1917: Communists seize power in Russia-
The Bolshevik revolution of 1917
Overthrew the provisional government during the war.
The Bolshevik party was led by Vladimir Lenin and used the soviet workers or red guard to overthrow the government.
The party wanted to leave the war against Germany.
This paved the way for the creation of the USSR in 1922
March 1918: Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ends war between Russia and Germany-
The treaty of Brest-Litrovsk signed march 3 1918
Russia lost some territory giving up Ukraine the polish and Baltic territories and Finland. But also removed the German army from Russian lands. This in turn made it so the German army only had to fight on one front.
September 1918: Battle of Argonne Forest-
The Battle of Argonne Forest was part of the final allied offensive in WW1 in France, and eventually led to the end of World War One. The attack consisted of allied powers including America, France and Britan. General John Pershing led the AEF (American Expeditionary Forces) ahead by two miles on the German front while Gen. Henri Gourad led the French Fourth Army.This marked a significant advantage over the enemy and caused a hault in the AEF until more troops could arrive.
This battle is known as the, "Hundred Days Offensive", being the largest attack in American history consisting of 1.2 million AEF soldiers deployed and resulted in 117,000 casualties ending on armistice day.
November 1918: Armistice ends WWI-
The agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War. It went into effect at 11 am on 11 November 1918, and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany. Although the armistice ended the actual fighting, it took six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty, the Treaty of Versailles.
June 1919: Treaty of Versailles signed-
The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after World War One had ended in 1918 and in the shadow of the Russian Revolution and other events in Russia. The treaty was signed at Versailles palace near Paris between Germany and the allies which it successfully ended the state of war.
