School KIDS Project

Help us learn about infections in schools

Children’s Mercy Kansas City is partnering with North Kansas City Schools (NKCS) to learn more about respiratory virus infections and how they spread in school communities.

• School KIDS will test students in school while they feel healthy.

• The program will also provide free on-demand testing for students who feel sick.

• Testing is easy with a swab only in the tip of your nose!

• School KIDS is voluntary. Students from all NKC Schools are eligible to sign up. Participants will be compensated.

What parents are saying about this project?

“The School KIDS program is amazing! It benefits both researchers and the participants. The paperwork is simple to complete and the emails I receive are short and concise regarding the information. The questionnaires are also quick to fill out. My 6 year old daughter was excited to earn money to do the nose swabs. She even does it herself! The option to drop off an at home sample at Children's Mercy hospital Northland location is a breeze. The swabs at school are very easy and last less than one minute. It does not interrupt class and the staff is friendly! I highly recommend the School KIDS program to continue to collect data on illnesses in a way that benefits both parties involved!”

-Megan Smith

Building Culture

The expectation in our building is to be kind, respectful, responsible and safe. However, we are experiencing unkind and disrespectful words and comments in conversations and, at times, directed toward individuals.

As a building, our students and staff will be come together and understand why it is unacceptable to use derogatory language. All classes will begin with a common message provided by the principal, Dr. Kroenke. Then, classroom teachers will facilitate class discussions and circles to discuss how hurtful language harms and is unkind. We will also discuss the power of kindness.

I would appreciate support and understanding as we continue to help our 6th graders understand the power behind the words and comments they use in conversation and toward each other.

Thank you,

Becky

New School Protection Specialist

Gateway has been afforded the opportunity to add a School Protection Specialist (SPS) to our staff. Our main goal by adding our SPS is visibility and a positive proactive presence.

Please read below...a message from SPS Borns

Hello! My name is Dylan Borns and I’m your new School Protection Specialist. I am excited to be at Gateway and meeting all of you! I am not a police officer, my position is to keep my kids and staff safe. Prior to this position at Gateway, I spent 27 years at a local fire department and retired as a Captain and a paramedic. During that career, I was blessed with numerous training opportunities which included becoming a CPR instructor, a Tactical Emergency Care Instructor, a firearms instructor, and a SWAT team paramedic where I got to work alongside police officers that keep us safe!

When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my Family; my wife Lindsey, and daughters Gracie, (15), and Ava, (13). My hobbies are spending time outside working on our property, going for rides with the family in the old Jeep CJ I built, and relaxing in our pool during the hot days of summer.

I look forward to a great rest of the year with all of you and if you have any questions or want to talk, never hesitate to reach out to me!

Read-a-Thon

Would your family like an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney Theme Park? We would love to send you.

Gateway 6th Grade Center is about to start a Read-a-thon Fundraiser. It is a fun and exciting way for your child to raise money while reading.

As an added incentive, any child that sends 10 text messages through their dashboard to promote our fundraiser will automatically be registered in a nationwide drawing for the Walt Disney Theme Park trip.

*One winner will be chosen each season out of all Read-a-thons held during that season.

Upcoming Read-a-thon

This year, we are excited to announce our second annual Read-a-thon fundraiser. Last year, this fundraiser allowed us to purchase a book vending machine for our building. Students earn book tokens for good behavior. The joy this vending machine has brought to our school is priceless! This year, we plan to use money raised to purchase books for the machine.

Our Read-a-thon will start February 6, 2023. We will also celebrate reading that week with spirit days. Please see our district website page for that information.

Approximately 1 week before we start our first reading session, we will send home a flyer with your student explaining how to activate their personal Read-a-thon page. It is important that a parent’s email address is used.

You will find this to be one of the easiest fundraisers around. By simply activating your student’s personal page and using the promotional tools found there, friends and family anywhere in the world can show their support for your student by donating to our Read-a-thon. Everything is done online. No need to distribute product or collect money.

Together, we can make literacy a priority. Please activate your student’s page today. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at ginger.ellison@nkcschools.org.

Sincerely,

Ginger Ellison

PAWS-January 10

PAWS – Positive Activities With Students – is an activity sponsored by booster club in conjunction with Gateway to reward students' positive behavior choices. Knowing that all humans make mistakes, consequences begin with:

· The 5th mark on the quarterly Success Tracker

· ISS/OSS within that quarter

· Lunch Detentions within that quarter

Please keep in mind if a student has received ISS/OSS as a result of a behavior choice during 2nd quarter, he/she will not be able to participate in PAWS on January 10. Rather, the student will remain in the classroom and be able to complete work and have time to reflect and set goals for the next quarter. Additionally, students who have received a lunch detention(s) will not attend the 1st session of PAWS, however, will attend the last 3 sessions of PAWS.

Students with 0-4 marks on the Success Tracker attend all 4 sessions of PAWS.

Students with 5-8 marks on the Success Tracker attend 3 sessions of PAWS.

Students with 9-10 marks on the Success Tracker attend 2 session of PAWS.

Students with 11-12 marks on the Success Tracker attend 1 session of PAWS.

*Success Trackers are available for parents to view daily as students have them
in their student planners.

Team Spirit Day!

Tomorrow is a huge team spirit day! We will end our semester with a spirit assembly and the team with the most spirit will earn bragging rights!

Students-wear your team color and/or holiday vacation spirit wear to show your spirit!

Review Information

Our expectation is that Gateway provides a respectful and safe community. Part of this is for students to understand that there is never a time in which mean, hateful or derogatory speech is okay to say, sing, write, read, or repeat...repeating even for clarification. We ask that students report to an adult if there is a concern.

Please review the following with your child.

Superintendent Town Hall Meetings

As we plan for the bright future ahead in North Kansas City Schools, our top priority is ensuring continuity and a strong organization to serve our community well. Dr. Dan Clemens has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2023 – 2024 school year. We greatly appreciate Dr. Clemens’ service as NKC Schools’ superintendent for the past seven years, and as he prepares to retire, the Board of Education is planning a purposeful, gradual transition to our next superintendent. The Board will begin reviewing candidates this winter and will select a Chief of Staff in the spring. This individual will work side-by-side with Dr. Clemens throughout the 2023-2024 school year, with the Board deciding whether to transition the Chief of Staff to Superintendent for the coming years.

You are invited to participate in a town hall meeting to gain your insight and thoughts on what is important as a new leader is hired for North Kansas City Schools.

Diversity Council

Our Gateway Diversity Council visited the Mattie Rhode's Center and learned about the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The students were given the opportunity to decorate their own candy skulls, a tradition that represents death and rebirth, the entire reason for Day of the Dead celebrations.

Gateway Debate Team

On October 25, 2022, Gateway attended its first debate tournament! Students traveled to Gloria Willis Middle School and competed in novice student congress debate. The winners in house B were Levi Ard (3rd place) and Avree Merten (4thplace)! The winners in house C were Olivia Ali (2nd place) and Evanne Williams (4thplace)! Our upcoming tournaments are November 1st, November 10th, and December 1st

Is my student eligible to participate in PAWS?

PAWS – Positive Activities With Students – is an activity sponsored by booster club in conjunction with Gateway to reward students positive behavior choices. Knowing that all humans make mistakes, consequences begin with:

· The 5th mark on the quarterly Success Tracker

· ISS/OSS within that quarter

· Lunch Detentions within that quarter

Please keep in mind if a student has received ISS/OSS as a result of a behavior choice, he/she will not be able to participate in PAWS on October 25.

6th Grade Expectations

As we are nearing the end of our first quarter, I took the opportunity to meet with each team to review expectations for a secondary student - specifically a 6th grader - in the NKC School District.

We compared our 6th grade year to a bridge that helps us cross from elementary school expectations into the world of secondary education (6-12 grades).

Library Book Fair

Dear Gateway Families,

Get Ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from October 3-6th in our library. Students will have opportunities to shop during the school day. Late nights will take place on the 4th and 5th during Parent/Teacher Conferences.

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account.

Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases.

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Gateway 6th Grade Center

Teton Science Schools

Hello Gateway families,

My name is Daniel Offield. Since Gateway opened in 2018, I have had the opportunity to share my love of learning with many North Kansas City 6th graders through math and inquiry. One of my biggest passions is the outdoors. I’ve spent many of my summers in our national forests and parks exploring, camping, and backpacking. I would love to share this passion with our students, and a recent discovery of mine makes that possible. An organization called Teton Science Schools (TSS), located in Jackson, Wyoming, minutes away from both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park provides an amazing opportunity to move students beyond the classroom into the beautiful outdoors.

Through this organization, Gateway students have an incredible opportunity to participate in an educational trip to these parks and surrounding areas during the summer of 2023. This would be Gateway’s first year to partner with Teton Science School, giving our six graders the chance to experience science standards in an authentic, real world learning environment. TSS would educate our students on topics that closely relate to the standards they will learn throughout the school year such as ecosystems, human impact on the environment, adaptations, and exploring national parks.

Dr. Kroenke and I are in preliminary planning stages. Currently, we are looking for around thirty students to participate this summer. If responses indicate a large enough interest, Gateway will work to organize a 4-night trip in July, leaving Monday and returning on a Friday. Students would stay in dorm style housing at the Jackson, WY Campus of TSS. All meals, transportation, lodging, and experiences would be provided by TSS while in Jackson. We are unsure of the exact cost currently, but we expect it to be in the $700-$900 range. Students would be expected to pay for the trip in its entirety by fundraising and family support. We would help plan fundraising opportunities for your student to offset the cost of the trip. In addition to the financial commitment, we would expect students to commit to a set number of service volunteer hours within our community. This commitment indicates the individual student’s commitment to a trip of this nature. While there would be some organized community service events in which students may participate, they would also have service hours to complete on their own.

I am very excited about this potential trip and the opportunities it would provide our 6th graders. This trip would provide lifetime memories and foster a love for the outdoors as well as give students firsthand experiences of the things they learn this year. I’m excited about the possibility of sharing my love of the outdoors with your child this summer.

Does this sound like an adventure in which your child would enjoy? We hope so! We would like to collect a preliminary number of those interested before deciding to move forward. Therefore, we are just gauging interest from our families. If you are interested in your child participating this summer, please email Daniel.offield@nkcschools.org no later than October 5, 2022.

Feel free to check out the Teton Science School online at

Thanks,

Daniel Offield

Bus Tracking App

If you are experiencing trouble with the bus tracking app, transportation has provided us with some quick tips to help figure out and resolve the issue:

  • Recently the app updated and kicked all users out. They will need to log in again. Their login is their students ID number for BOTH the username and password. This should be standard across all users, but we have run into a few scenarios where it isn’t. If they can’t get in still they can contact either myself or James Reed and we can look at their information from the back end.

  • Android Issues: The recent android update has caused an issue for a large batch of users, wherein the app deletes itself off the phone and can’t be reinstalled. This is an issue we have told versatrans mystop and they are working on a fix as we speak. Apparently this is a widespread issue that is effecting not only our users but other districts as well.

If these two don't fix any issues you are experiencing, please call 816-321-5007.

Football Games and All Other District Events

As we continue to provide the safest, most enjoyable experience at our athletic and activity events, we are adding a few additional procedures moving forward for the remainder of the 22-23 school year:

1. Middle school and elementary school students may only gain admittance to events when accompanied by an adult. If students arrive to the entrance gate without an adult, they will be asked to contact an adult immediately and will not be allowed entrance into the event.

2. All middle school and elementary school students will be asked to remain with an adult OR in the assigned seating area determined by the school for the duration of the event.

3. All students will be asked to remain in the stands during games and will not be allowed to loiter in the concourse or restroom areas.

4. Students who are unwilling to comply with the directions of the on-site administrators, supervisors or law enforcement will not be able to attend athletic or activity events for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year.

5. All students should leave immediately following the conclusion of all school events.

6. All school district policies remain in effect during all activity and athletic events.

Staley Home Football Game

Tomorrow night is the Future Falcon feeder pattern football game on FALCON FIELD at the District Activities Complex at 7pm vs. Lee’s Summit West. We would love to see all our families from our feeder schools at the game. As a reminder to the communication that was sent out a couple of weeks ago from the district, we have new policies in place at our stadiums for football games. Please adhere to the following policies to ensure that we have a wonderful night celebrating all of our Falcons, future, past and present.

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

1st Quarter ACE, after class events, begins on Monday, September 12. Sessions begin as soon as the busses have been dismissed. Session 1 ends at 4:10pm, and students may be picked up by car at that time. Session 2 will begin at 4:10 and will end at approximately 4:50pm. Students who do not have a ride at the time busses are dismissed, will be placed on their home bus to ride home.

Safety Drills

As building leader, my number 1 priority is our students' safety. We know that through practice we are prepared. therefore, we will hold practice drills throughout the year. This way, students and staff are familiar with the procedures in case of a fire, severe weather, intruder. Please note, there may be times during the year that I will ask teachers to Lock and Teach for the purpose of protecting an individual's privacy.

We will hold an intruder drill known as a Lock and Teach/Lockdown drill on Tuesday, September 13.

Online Safety

We generally find that a group chat is fertile soil for hurtful comments, inappropriate images and comments, or unwanted attention. Please take a moment to read over the PSA from NationalOnlineSafety.com

Student Activity/Athletic Event Attendance Procedure

As we continue to provide the safest, most enjoyable experience at our athletic and activity events, we are adding a few additional procedures moving forward for the remainder of the 22-23 school year:

1. Middle school and elementary school students may only gain admittance to events when accompanied by an adult. If students arrive to the entrance gate without an adult, they will be asked to contact an adult immediately and will not be allowed entrance into the event.

6. All school district policies remain in effect during all activity and athletic events.

Please communicate these expectations to your families as this will become effective immediately. We understand that it may take time for our students to adjust to these expectations, so we thank you for working with them to make our events as safe as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Message From the Nurse...

Our nurse, Mrs. Tate, will always be the one to call should your student be ill and not able to remain at school. We ask that students do not call their parents asking to be picked up because they do not feel well. We always encourage the students to visit with the nurse, which will allow her to determine if a brief rest or snack would remedy the situation. Should a child not feel well, is running a temperature, or has gotten sick, Mrs. Tate will call and inform the parent/guardian of the circumstances. If a child is running a temperature or has gotten sick, he/she will need to be picked up from school.

If your child should call you from the class phone or text/call from his/her cell phone, we ask that you call the nurse's office to confirm that he/she is needing to be picked up due to an illness.

Transportation Changes

Parents do not need to notify the office regarding a change in transportation like you were asked to in elementary school. We ask that you communicate this to your child at home, prior to leaving for school.

In the event of an emergency, and transportation needs do change, please call the office, when possible, before 2:00PM. After 2:00PM, we will do our best to get the message to the student, but cannot guarantee that it will be received in time due to the high volume of visitors and phone calls in the office at that time.

Breakfast and Lunch Payment Information

NKC Schools Families:

As your family prepares for the first day of school on August 22, programs are available to help with the cost of school meals and internet service. We highly encourage all who may be eligible to apply. If you are interested in these benefits, please see all details below and complete your applications.

Free & Reduced Meal Program

Healthy and nutritious meals fuel student success. North Kansas City Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services Department is ready to serve your student each day for breakfast and lunch this school year! Now that the federal waiver has expired, school meals are no longer free and have returned to a pre-pandemic cost structure:

Secondary Breakfast: $1.70

Secondary Lunch: $3.15

We strongly encourage you to apply for the free and reduced meals program if you believe that your family might be eligible. This program can help you qualify for benefits beyond nutrition for participating families, including fee waivers, activity scholarships and school supplies. We recommend that all families take advantage of this option if eligible.

Your children may qualify for free or reduced price meals if your household income meets the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines. Families receiving SNAP, FDPIR, or TANF assistance are also eligible, as well as all foster children and those who meet the definition of homeless, runaway or migrant. Submit your form online here.

Click here for assistance and more information from North Kansas City Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services Department.

Internet Benefits: Affordable Connectivity Program

The Affordable Connectivity Program is a new Federal Communications Commission program that helps connect families and households struggling to afford internet service. This benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers.

You can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) online or via mail.

Click here or call 877-384-2575 to learn more about the benefit, including eligibility and enrollment information.

Additionally, please note that this benefit is not considered income for purposes of determining eligibility for free and reduced-price school meals.

Students who accumulate charges of $20 or more on their meal account will receive a yogurt cup, cheese stick, and milk until the balance has been rectified.

At ParenTeenConnect.org, you can hear from real parents and teens about the issues that cause conflict in their lives—including screen time, independence, responsibility, and communication—and get expert advice. Visit ParenTeenConnect.org at home with your child, select a topic together, and get talking!

This link goes live on August 10 and expires on September 2.

Online ordering does not allow single print purchase - an actual portrait package must be in your cart to allow the add-ons to be available. Also, traditional portrait gray is the only background option for online orders. If you want a color background option, you must order at the RPG clerking desk on picture day with an order form. (Color backgrounds are applied as the picture is taken and cannot be added later).

Breakfast and Lunch Payment Information

Students will be charged for their meal based on their free, reduced, or full pay status, utilizing the same process as in previous school years prior to COVID-19. A new free or reduced-price meals application must be filled out each year after July 1. You can apply by scanning the QR code below with the camera on your phone. If your income has gone down or the number of people living in your household has gone up, please consider applying.

Students who accumulate charges of $20 or more on their meal account will receive a yogurt cup, cheese stick, and milk until the balance has been rectified.
