A Fun Run Week!

There was so much action and activity around the halls of Smoky Row this week. I bet your children are going to be tired this weekend! I know I sure am!

Thank you to all of you who showed support to our wonderful PTO by sponsoring your child in this year's fundraiser. We reached our goal! The money will be used for many different curricular items, but the majority of the money will be spent to enhance our Makerspace Lab. If you aren't sure what Makerspace is, click HERE to read a short article about how this .

We took the Unit 1 Reading Comprehension Test together today. I wanted the students to understand the structure and organization of this important test. The test is coming home today in your child's Rocket Folder.

Here is what is planned for next week - September 19-23:

Reading: What Happens When Nature Loses Its Balance?
  • Compare and Contrast
  • Asking Questions to monitor understanding of text
  • Reading a humorous fiction story

We are plugging away writing our Personal Narratives. The skills we are working on are:
  • Creating strong leads
  • Creating strong endings
  • Using powerful word choice
  • Adding dialogue to our stories
  • Creating paragraphs

Mrs. Townsley (Instructional Assistant) work with your child editing/revising their work each day. We look forward to our published stories. We promise to share them with you!

Social Studies: Chapter 3 - Geography and the Way We Live
I will grade your child's Chapter 2 Test and return it on Monday, September 19.
YAY!!! We finished learning The 50 States Song. I will video this amazing class singing it together next week and will link the video to the newsletter. Stay tuned...
We will be working on the following next week:
  • Physical geography of places in the US
  • Physical geography of Carmel
  • Natural resources found in Carmel

Math: Chapter 2 Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers
  • Addition and Subtraction Number Stories
  • Adding 2 and 3 digit numbers
  • Subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers

**Please encourage your child to practice math facts each night using It is a wonderful way for him/her to quickly master facts and makes a HUGE difference in their math computation as we work toward more difficult concepts.

Each month I will be looking for two students from my class who are displaying the HABIT OF THE MONTH. Throughout the month of September we are working on BEGINNING WITH THE END IN MIND. We discuss the importance of putting this skill into practice into our daily lives! Be sure to ask your child if he/she is using this skill at home and school.
