A Spring Celebration of Glorious Gardens & Events

Formerly the Rhododendron Festival, The Powerco Garden Festival was established in 1987 and continues to delight people from all over the world. As usual, this year, there is an intriguing mixture of both unique and stunning gardens, each with their own story to tell.

The region's public gardens are festival gems, but it’s the private gardens open exclusively for the 10 days of the festival that are a "must see."

So much to see

Every year gardeners prepare and open up their beautiful gardens to excite and enchant visitors - both local and from around the world. Cottage gardens, native gardens, highly structured or rambling and informal offerings - whatever your taste in gardens there is something for everyone. Plus, of course, the many craft shops, galleries, nurseries, churches and other places of interest as you travel the region. This is a truly unique Spring experience, which inspires & motivates visitors to take their own gardening skills to the next level & gives them ideas to beautify their own personal patch of paradise. It's not just a show. This festival is a 10 day adventure exploring outstanding gardens throughout the region.

In 2018, we visited gardens within or in close proximity to New Plymouth. This year, although we will visit some city gardens, we intend to predominantly visit the gardens in more outlying areas (Waitara, Kaponga, Stratford, Inglewood, Opunake, Manaia, Hawera). Many of these are more substantial gardens - as Paul says, having grown up on a farm with parents who loved gardening: " If you want a bigger garden in the country, all you do is shift the fence, and enthuse your kids about doing more weeding!"
