Our Mission is Possible...with Teamwork!
- Dr. Paul Nehrig - Principal
- Mr. David Sanford - Assistant Principal
Dear Panthers,
In just a few weeks we will wrap up another school year, say goodbye for summer break, and look forward to a new beginning in August. I’m so proud of our students, teachers, support staff and families! Every day, we are accomplishing our mission because of your teamwork. In this edition of the newsletter, you’ll see many examples of the awesome achievements made possible by working together. Remember:
“The mission of our Forest Lake Elementary community is to provide a learning environment where all students can achieve academic success”
Together, let’s keep finding ways to make sure all students can find success – not just in the final weeks of this school year, but for years to come.
As we look ahead to a strong finish to the school year, a few notes:
- This week (May 7 – 11) is Appreciation Week at Forest Lake. Each day, we have special gifts and activities designed to let our teachers & staff members know how grateful we are for the difference they make in our students’ lives each day. Thank you to our PTO and key members of our staff for organizing the fun! Parents and students, please take a moment this week to share your appreciation for our teachers and staff.
- School Advisory Council (SAC) elections continue through May 17th. Ballots are available in the front office. If you would like to be considered for an appointment to our SAC, please let me know.
- Stay in touch with Forest Lake! In addition to this newsletter, we are striving to provide ways for families to connect with Forest Lake. Currently we have our website, Sunday night Panther Update messages, our Twitter account (@ForestLakeVCS), Volusia Schools App, marquee sign, classroom communication systems like Remind101 and ClassDojo, phone and face-to-face conferences, and more. A school Facebook page is coming soon, and if you have additional suggestions for ways to communicate, please feel free to let us know!
- Finally, let’s all avoid “brain drain” this summer. Summer learning loss is real, but can be prevented. One of the best (and easiest) strategies is to take time each day for reading! Limiting “screen time” is important too, as well as keeping a regular bedtime, eating a healthy diet, and getting plenty of exercise. Our teachers have lots of suggestions for avoiding “brain drain” this summer – just ask. Let’s start next school year ready to learn!
Thank you all for making this a great school year! I wish you all the best as you enjoy your summer break and prepare for the year ahead.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nehrig

Grade Level News
FIRST GRADE
Only 4 weeks to go!!!! With so little time left, it is extremely important that your child is prompt and prepared for school every day. First grade is busy learning about living things, budgets, adding three numbers, and fractions. By this time of the year our students should have mastered the first-grade sight words that have been sent home every week. Your child should be reading fluently and should be able to read at least 60 words per minute. Repeated one-on-one readings will increase fluency. Be on the lookout for information on our end of the year activities. We will need lots of approved volunteers.
SECOND GRADE
Happy Summer! Happy Vacation! It is just around the corner. We are working on our 26 day countdown where each day there is a letter of the alphabet and an activity that matches the letter. We will be having a picnic at the end of May. Someone will contact you with more information. We are closing out the year with intense practice on addition and subtraction and the study of the interdependence of plants and animals. We watched caterpillars grow into butterflies and released them back to nature. It has been a great year; we all thank you for all your support and cooperation. Have a good time with your children this summer. Remember to read often!!! Second grade teachers!
Forest Lake Elementary's 2nd Grade after school club will be participating in the First ever Lego League Junior EXPO sponsored by FRC team SMASH and Volusia STEM. The event will take place at Spruce Creek High School on May 12th from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Spectators are welcome to come and cheer them on!

ART
The kids are wrapping up the school year with art centers. We are in the process of sending home Georgia O’Keeffe inspired flower paintings. Summer will be upon us before you know it.
Just so you’re aware the Gateway Center in Debary has art camps for kids this summer. Here is a link if you’re interested: http://www.gatewaycenterforthearts.org/calendar/page/2/
I also wanted to attach a link for rainy day art/craft activities to keep the kids creative over the summer:
STEM
In STEM students have recently started working on a project to create or invent an animal. Students are encouraged consider where the animal lives, what it eats, and it how it protects itself, among other factors, when designing their animals. Students will draw a picture of their animal, write a grade-level appropriate description, and give a presentation to their classmates about their animal. Students are not required to work on this project at home, but should they wish to make a model, poster, or other creation to represent their animal, they are welcome to do so. We look forward to learning about the all creative animals our little Panthers develop.
