Classroom Spotlight
Ms. Gaston's Kindergarten
Last week, Mrs. Campisano visited Ms. Gaston's class as a mystery reader. Students listened to "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," and then enjoyed their own independent reading with a variety of seasonal books.
During the week, Ms. Gaston's class compared numbers to 10 using math vocabulary "more," "less," and "equal to." Students also learned new sounds and started their unit on plants. The knowledge unit began by identifying the different parts of a plant (root, stem, leaves, flower, seeds) and drawing pictures to show each part. Over the next several days, students will learn what plants need in order to stay alive and will be introduced to the concepts of the life cycle and parts of plants, pollination, and more!
Important Dates & Cafeteria Info...
As you know, from previous district and school communications, federal waivers for free meals expired in June 2022. All districts have been required to return to pre-pandemic operations for the 2022-23 school year. Meals free of charge will be available only to those students who qualify through Direct Certification, Categorical Eligibility, or the 2022-2023 Application for Free and Reduced Price School Meals. Please contact the main office if you need assistance with completing an application: 732.505.5830.
We encourage you to review the weekly menu with your child to determine what days (if any) they will purchase lunch. Our district is committed to ensuring the health of our students and we will never deny a student lunch if they report that they are hungry or have not brought a lunch from home. Kids and Nutrition
Keeping our kids fueled!
According to the Mayo Clinic, "Nutrition for kids is based on the same ideas as nutrition for adults. Everyone needs the same types of things, such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. These are called nutrients. Children need different amounts of specific nutrients at different ages.
The best eating pattern for a child's growth and development considers the child's age, activity level and other characteristics. Food packed with nutrients — with no or limited sugar, saturated fat, or salt added to it — is considered nutrient dense. Focusing on nutrient-dense foods helps kids get the nutrients they need while limiting overall calories."
So how do we get our kids to actually eat healthy foods? It's a challenge as old as time. Below are some links to healthy school lunches that are easy, tasty and healthy. Nutrition affects students' thinking skills, behavior, and health, all factors that impact academic performance, so I hope these resources help you choose the best "fuel" for your child's "engine" (their brains!)

COLD WEATHER OUTER WEAR
Kids In Coats
In order to ensure a consistent procedure for appropriate outer wear on the playground while respecting students' individual comfort, we will allow students outside for recess with one additional layer of outerwear. This outerwear needs to be one layer in addition to what they are wearing all day in class.
We will always do our best to get students outside each day for fresh air and exercise. We thank you for sending them to school prepared for recess!
