Newsletter 18, Week 5 Term 4

Waiau School ⎪ 18th November 2022

Kia ora Koutou,

Last week we were hosted by the Johnson and Davies' families up at Queenfield Farm. It was lovely to be welcomed to our visit by Alex and Clara. A fantastic morning was had by all. There was lots of learning for young and old, challenges and of course big machinery. The new Combine Harvester was a hit! We then headed off down to Lyndon Homestead where Jude Flintoft and her little dog Tommy welcomed us to the amazing homestead. It was great to be able to experience local history first hand and we really appreciated Jude and Steve’s hospitality. They are hosting an open day on Sunday 4th December for the Amuri Historical Society.

Ruby has been busy cooking up a storm and this week. She made a special meal for her friends. She cooked Cheesy Garlic Pizzas. They were very popular. Ruby set the table and prepared the meal herself.

Courtney, Miriama and Aroha, our Whānau Ora Navigators from Takahanga Marae came on Wednesday to help make poi for us to use for our Kapa Haka. It was a fun and productive session.

It was great to have a bit of much needed rain this week.

We are all keen to make use of our Community Pool and hopefully the warm weather plays ball next week so we get over there.

Have a great weekend.

Staff Update

Change is the nature of teaching and education. Over the course of time staff leave schools to take up new positions. This year sees Mrs Ginny Macfarlane departing Waiau after being our Junior Room Teacher for 3 years. Ginny will be missed at Waiau, her professionalism and dedication to her position has benefited our students and school over the past three years.

We will be acknowledging Ginny’s contribution to our school at the end of the year.

I would like to thank Ginny for all that she has done and will continue to do for our students.

As a school, we wish her all the best for her new endeavour.

Student successes

It is fabulous to see our students succeeding in their passions and sports outside of school. These are a few of the recent successes.

Henry and George won medals and trophies at recent Motocross events. Well done boys, all of your practice on the course at home is definitely paying off.

Charlotte also had success at her recent Jazz exam in Hanmer.

Kenzie has recently attended the National Cheerleading Competition in Auckland where Kenzie and her team were awarded 2nd place!

Additional support homework/follow up tasks

As the school year draws to a close our learning programmes are still in full swing. If your child has additional follow up work to do at home as part of their learning please support them to complete this. We need to make the most of the additional support that we are able to provide currently. Unfortunately it is not looking likely that we will have access to Reading Recovery in 2023. We are looking into other ways we can offer acceleration programmes to our students.

Canterbury Cricket Visit

Liam from Canterbury Country Cricket travelled up to work with us last Monday. Great skill sessions were held and we learned a new game called Diamond Cricket.
