Scene Summary

This scene is in the square in District 12 during the reaping. What happens is they go to the square to announce their two tributes for the seventy-fourth hunger games. When they announce that Katniss Everdeen's little sister, Prim is chosen, she volunteers for her. They all also announce that the boy tribute is Peeta Mellark. This scene is very important because this scene changes Katniss's life forever.

Book Summary

The book begins with the day of the reaping where they choose two tributes for district twelve. When 16 year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her sister, her life changes. She and her other tribute, Peeta Mellark head to the capital to be prepared and then they head to the arena for the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. They start and she like other tributes start running for supplies and she heads to the woods for survival. Later in the book, she befriends another tribute who they eventually try to survive until she is killed. Later, Katniss finds Peeta badly injured and she tends to keep him safe until the games are over. Finally, after a small act of rebellion, they both are crowned victors.
