A Message from the WSD Administration

Good People, Good Citizens and Good Learners

by Jacqueline Parks, WCS Building Principal

One major goal at WCS is to help students develop into good people, good citizens and good learners. Part of being a good person is acknowledging mistakes and figuring out a way to make it right. The process of acknowledging mistakes and making it right can be challenging and students need different amounts of time, conversation and reflection to get to this outcome. This is one of the roles that our Planning Room fulfills.

The Planning Room at WCS is facilitated by Joe Carr and Nadine Paffett-Lugassy. One purpose of our Planning Room process is to document student behavior, but more importantly to facilitate discussions with students that focus on making better choices. Brain research has shown that children and adolescents are not yet able to completely think through decisions to see the potential consequences. They also can’t independently generate other options that might lead to more positive consequences without prompting and support. The power in writing the plan is the discussion that takes place. We know that some students will need to hear the messages multiple times before a behavior change occurs.

Part of the process also includes having the student call home and share the behavior choice with his/her parents. This serves two purposes. First, it helps to keep parents informed of discipline infractions. Second, it is one way to help students take ownership of a mistake. Click here to continue reading.

WSD Communication Survey

The Williston School District believes that effective communication with parents, care givers, and families is a crucial element in providing the very best education to our students. In our ongoing efforts to enhance this communication with families and tell the amazing story of Williston, we would like to hear from you about what types of information are most important to you and how best you'd like to access that information. Thank you for taking time to respond before Monday, November 16.

Community Forums November 12

The Williston School Board is holding two Community Forums in November, both on Thursday, November 12, at Williston Central School in the Music Room off the main lobby.

The first meeting is our annual Budget Forum that begins at 6:00 p.m. This forum provides an opportunity for voters to raise questions about our school funding and to identify their priorities, all of which will help the Board as it works with our school administrators on putting together the 2016-2017 budget for voters approval in March.

The second forum, which will begin immediately following the Budget Forum, will focus on ACT 46. Residents will receive a brief overview of Act 46 and the Study Committee efforts underway in our supervisory union to evaluate options for merging the five towns in the CSSU into one school district. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about the process and provide your input.

Lastly, as the Williston School Board begins this year’s budget preparation season, we would like to reach out to community members who are interested in serving as Budget Buddies. Our Board has received valuable assistance from Budget Buddies in past years. These individuals work side-by-side with the Board as we review and make decisions about the 2016-2017 school budget. The time commitment is only three evenings in November and December. If you are interested, please email Kevin Mara at

What is TAKE A BREAK at Allen Brook School?

At Allen Brook School we are trying to say “TAKE A BREAK” instead of “go to time out”!

We ALL need to “take a break” so we are able to make a better choice. We can take a break here (close), take a break with a buddy teacher (near) and take a break in the Tree House (further away). Take a break is for everyone! Take a break is alone time! We need to help students recognize their feeling, name the feeling and identify what it looks and feels like.

Click here for resources that are in TAKE A BREAK areas!!! Feel free to use these at home!

WSD Spring Musical will be SHREK

Students in grades 6-8 can audition for the play. Students in grades 5-8 can be part of stage crew. The stage crew builds and paints the sets and helps run the show during production week.

There will be a workshop for the auditions on Thursday, December 3rd at 3pm. Come learn the music, practice the readings and do a little dance to prepare for the auditions, which will take place the following week December 7-11. SHREK will run April 8-9, 2016! Rehearsals will start in January after the Christmas break.

SHREK is looking for Stage Managers

Are you interested in becoming a stage manager for the spring musical? Are you free after school? SHREK needs you!

Stage managers must be available for after school rehearsals and have no commitments the time around the show, April 1-10. The stage managers will take attendance, take blocking notes from the director, keep track of props needed and how they are used, help run music for dance and fill in for actors who are absent at rehearsals.

We are looking for a total of 3 stage managers, usually in grades 7-8. If you are interested, get a form from the drama board outside the theater and return it completed to the drama mailbox in the main office. You will need to have your teacher and parents sign off on the form.

If you have any questions, please contact Cathy Rylant at 310-5900 or
