February 1, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Hola familias de Woodcrest,
February is jam-packed month for us at Woodcrest! First, it is Black History Month. While our goal is to embed Black history into our learning throughout the whole year, this month provides an important opportunity to explore as others across the country engage in Black History Month activities.
This is also I Love to Read Month. As we continue to work on building community and CARES (Cooperation, Assertion, Respect, Empathy and Self-Control), we will have a building-wide Book Bingo activity for all classes around reading books that address a variety of emotions, social situations and community-building ideas.
February also brings Valentine’s Day. This day offers itself as a way to build community and talk about friendship. At school, this includes activities embedded into the day that focus on friendship, showing others that we care about them and building community. We will not have traditional Valentine’s Day parties, but if your child would like to bring a Valentine for each child in their class, they can be exchanged at the end of the day and be opened at home. Please do not send food or candy.
We also have conferences this month. Once again, we will offer flexibility with conferences. They can be done in-person, online via WebEx or by phone. We have set the following dates:
Thursday, Feb. 16: In-person evening conferences
Friday, Feb. 17: In-person daytime conferences
Wednesday, Feb. 22: WebEx or phone conferences in the evening
Individual teachers will also offer other dates and times to connect as needed to meet your needs. We look forward to these conversations.
In partnership,
Jaime

4th Grade Families: Visit Westwood Thursday
The Westwood Intermediate and Middle School team is excited to meet next year's 5th graders! They are hosting a Westwood Welcome event for fourth graders and their families on Thursday, February 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Stop by and attend several brief, topic-specific information sessions and tour the building.
Meeghan Olson, Braden Ripken recognized for academics, arts and athletics
Seniors Meeghan Olson and Braden Ripken were nominated for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Academics, Arts and Athletics Triple “A” award. This award honors high school seniors who have a 3.0 or higher GPA and participate in both athletic and fine arts activities. Read more about these high-achieving student-athletes and their involvement at Spring Lake Park Schools.
The Panthers for a Purpose event is less than a month away!
The Panthers for a Purpose event is the largest fundraiser for the Panther Foundation with all proceeds going to Spring Lake Park Schools. Last school year, the Foundation awarded $100,000 to programs, projects and special events impacting each school and all grade levels.
Join the Panther Community at the Panthers for a Purpose Party on Saturday, February 25 at Bunker Hills Event Center to celebrate and raise funds to continue this work. The party begins at 5 p.m. with a complimentary social hour. Entertainment will be provided by Twin Cities favorite, Good for Gary.
Tickets are going quickly; you don't want to miss this special event. Purchase tickets here.
Find all of the details for the Week of Giving and the Party on our event website.
Scuba Diving Fun
Last week, fourth grade students had the opportunity to learn about scuba diving, all thanks to Sra. Burda! The students not only learned about the profession and the skills needed to become a certified scuba diver, they were also able to see the equipment in person! It was so nice to see the students get excited about such a fun activity.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS
Thanks to all the volunteers including Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA who helped with our STEM night last Friday. Families had a great time exploring activities that demonstrated engineering, math, physics and other science principles.
ART ADVENTURE
Last call for art adventure volunteers as PTO hosts this program during school hours with classrooms in the month of February. Sign up on Konstella!
