A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
November 1, 2019
An update from our School Improvement Team
During the first few weeks of school, our School Improvement Team decided upon our Building Goal. Our goal is to challenge ourselves as professionals, but more importantly, challenge our students in the effort to achieve more every day!
Here is one of the components of our Building Goal for the 2019-2020 school year. Staff will increase student discourse by focusing on the four domains of language acquisition (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking). This will work to improve students’ reading and math scores across all subgroups, as measured by the 2019-2020 NWEA assessment. This will also increase student engagement as measured by the data from the discourse tracking observation log.
Using the four domains of language acquisition and increasing students discussing academic specific content are high leverage strategies that have positive effects on student achievement.
Lastly below, is our Mission and Vision statement and some of our collective commitments that we review as Carleton staff members.
Mission
The mission of Carleton Middle School is to value the individual and celebrate learning.

My Own Learning
I had the opportunity to attend two different professional learning sessions at the Macomb Intermediate School District on Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week and I thought I'd take some time to list some of my favorite quotes from the guest speakers or the colleagues in my group.
"People support that which they help create."
"The best decisions are made closest to the point of implementation."
"Did they build your school as a place for the adults to like each other and hang out?"
"The smartest person in the room is the room."
"All of us is better than none of us."
"The diversity of skills and talent makes us a stronger team."
"I think there's a lot of conversations about teaching but very few conversations about learning."
"I'm relentlessly respectful in public and respectfully relentless in private."
"Principals need to treat people fairly not equally."
"I can't ask my teachers to work any harder but I can help them work differently."
Ms. Joy is one scary bus driver!!!
