Mustang Round-Up

2017-18 Cheyenne Middle School Newsletter - December

From Our Principal

Happy Holidays Mustang Families!

December is here with warm and balmy weather. I look forward to our first cold snap as we move into the winter season. My family is ready to make hot chocolate and sit by the fire. This time of year goes by so quickly. As we enter the holiday season take the time to experience the sights, sounds, and joys of the season.

This month holds many concerts, performances, and athletic events. We don’t want you to miss out on any events that we have planned. It is important to check our school calendar on the website for updated information. There are only 13 days left until the first semester comes to a close. This is the time to keep an eye on parent portal as all December work, projects and tests will be finalized by December 20th. If your family will be leaving early for the holiday please contact their teacher and grade level administrator to make plans for making-up work before the break.

I want to thank all of the staff, students, and families for a great first semester! It is really a joy to work with all of you. Our Mustang family is truly the best! I wish your families a very happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!

From the PTO

"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!" Happy Holidays Mustang Families! Here we are at the start of December with lots of fun activities ahead at Cheyenne. The 6th grade Social is December 7 from 3-5pm. This is going to be a fantastic Winter Carnival themed Social with tons of games and treats. Volunteers are needed. Be sure to check for the SignUp Genius on the Cheyenne PTO website to help at this fun event.

Grab your ice skates to support Cheyenne for Spirit Night at the Outdoor Ice Rink. This has been booked for December 15 from 6-8pm. The cost will be $10 and there will be food for purchase. More details to be announced soon. This is the perfect way to start the Winter Holiday Season. Also, when you are shopping for your Holiday gifts, don't forget to use Amazon Smile and select Cheyenne Middle School as your designated charity. Our students directly benefit from this and it's an easy, free way to support our students. Last year Amazon Smile gave back $141 to Cheyenne and with your help I am positive that we can make that amount even bigger!

Our Fall Fundraiser sheets and pillows will be here soon! An email notification will be sent out regarding pick up times. This was our first year doing this fundraiser and it was a success!

Thank you for all that you do for our students, our staff and our school!!!

Blast from the Band

Congratulations to the Cheyenne band students selected to participate in the Central Oklahoma Band Director’s Association Honor Band clinic/concert, (CODA). These students competed with literally hundreds of students from over 50 schools participating in the audition process. We are very proud to announce that the following students were selected for the honor band: Sarah Bird, Jack Li, Olivia Pierce, Parker Mason, Reagan Giordano, Charity Bernard, John Wilson, Trenton Paris, Will Ford, Pierce NeeDels. These students will rehearse with the honor band in Norman, OK on January 5, 2018, followed by a concert held on January 6, 2017. All of the students who auditioned worked very hard and are to be commended for their efforts.

The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade winter concert is Thursday, December 14, 2017, at 6:30 pm at Edmond North High School auditorium. We encourage you to stay and listen the the Edmond North HS bands winter concert immediately following Cheyenne’s.

The 7th grade will be traveling on a “caroling” trip to local senior venues and an elementary school on Wednesday, December 20. This is always a fun time for the students to share their musical talents with others.

The instrumental music program at Cheyenne Middle School is currently holding a fundraiser with 100% money profit for our program. Please see a band student to purchase your LOMA tickets. The fundrasier ends 12/20/17.

As the holiday season quickly approaches there are many possible music gifts you could offer your child. Here are a few suggestions. A metronome, tuner, (metronome/tuner combinations are also available), recordings of professional musicians performing on their particular instrument, instrument stand, silk swabs (clarinets, oboes, saxophones), D’Addario reeds, D’Addario mouthpiece, H ligatures, padded neck strap, music stand, pop music books with CD’s, straight mute, new cases, egg shakers for percussion, private lessons and even a step-up instrument. Please contact us if you need help with brands or locating any of the items listed.

Musically yours,

From the Orchestra Podium

Just around the corner, the Cheyenne Middle School orchestra will present its Winter Concert on Friday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the Edmond North High School auditorium. The concert will feature our three orchestras and the award winning Edmond North High School Orchestras. Cheyenne Orchestra members, out of courtesy to the North Orchestras, are expected to stay for the entire concert! It will give our orchestra members a chance to hear what they will be playing in a few years. Also on this concert is the annual silent basket auction sponsored by the Edmond North Orchestra Parent Boosters. Please come early to join the fun and support the future of the Cheyenne Orchestra!

The 8th grade orchestra will be caroling at local elementary schools and a retirement center on December 20th. More information will be given out as the date gets closer.

Finally, as we approach the gift-giving season, please consider a gift that will better your child’s musical experience. A new set of “Dominant”, “Zyex”, or “Helicore” brand strings or other accessory makes an excellent stocking stuffer. These strings along with many other orchestra ideas can be found at any of our metro music vendors or online at www.sharmusic.com.

Thank you friends and family for your support of our orchestra and all of the arts.

2017 State Test Results Will Go Home Before the Holiday

The State Department has been working diligently to get the 2017 OSTP state test scores released to schools. Scores have been delivered to schools and we are currently preparing them for release to families. We plan to send scores home with students on Tuesday, December 19th. The scores are also being uploaded into parent portal and will be available digitally soon.

Last year we had new tests based on new, more rigorous standards. Anytime there are new standards, there is a new test and the State Department of Education is then required to set new cut scores for the tests. The new cut scores for this year will be calibrated to create higher expectations for teaching and learning.
