Kindness Week

Your donations to our coin war resulted in a total of $961 - thank you for your generosity! All of the funds go towards building a school in Tijuana, Mexico. The class that scored the most points in the coin war was Mrs. Benn's class. Here's a great story of kindness: When Mrs. Benn's class was announced as the winner, Mrs. Busalacchi's class across the hall cheered and cheered for their friends in the other 2nd grade class. Mrs. Benn was so moved that she gave a "Golden Lion" to Mrs. Buslacchi's entire class (Golden Lions are our schoolwide positive recognition awards). This is the type of character we celebrate at Lakeview!

How to Develop Character

The School District of South Milwaukee is been recognized nationally as a district of character. Our efforts to define and teach positive character to students has been recognized as the "SMWay". Character can be taught - like math, reading, and any other subject. In fact, this might be the most important learning our children ever experience for future success. Here is an article entitled "How Families Develop Character in Children".

Engaged in Class

Conferences are coming up (Feb 19 & 20) and one of the best questions you could ask your child's teacher is this: "Is my child engaged in his/her work?"

At Lakeview, we have three expectations for students:

• Be safe

• Be respectful

• Be engaged

Being "engaged" means reading independently during Reader's Workshop time. It means asking questions when you aren't sure. It means being able to struggle productively and defend your thinking. It means being able to help someone else who does not understand yet. It means being original. "Engagement" is a huge factor in academic growth and achievement. In South Milwaukee, we use curriculum that asks a lot of our students and puts the ownership on each child to read, think, talk, listen, build, sing, draw, move, etc. Ask your child how he/she engages in learning and then ask the teacher at conferences on February 19th and 20th.

MAP Scores

You should have received your child's MAP scores in the mail this week. Please review them. If you have questions, please consult with your child's teacher at conferences. This is an important data point in your child's academic growth and achievement. The final MAP tests for this year will be in May.

Snowball Dance & Basket Raffle Information

Lions ROAR! Recognize a staff member at Lakeview

Is there a staff member at Lakeview that you would like to recognize? Our PTO has set up an easy way for you to recognize anyone at Lakeview that is making a difference for your child. That could be a teacher, paraprofessional aide, secretary, food service, or custodian. There are so many people working together for our students! We encourage you to let the PTO know so they can pass on your compliments! Here is the link to the survey. (You are welcome to submit more than one!)
