How to Develop Character
Engaged in Class
At Lakeview, we have three expectations for students:
• Be safe
• Be respectful
• Be engaged
Being "engaged" means reading independently during Reader's Workshop time. It means asking questions when you aren't sure. It means being able to struggle productively and defend your thinking. It means being able to help someone else who does not understand yet. It means being original. "Engagement" is a huge factor in academic growth and achievement. In South Milwaukee, we use curriculum that asks a lot of our students and puts the ownership on each child to read, think, talk, listen, build, sing, draw, move, etc. Ask your child how he/she engages in learning and then ask the teacher at conferences on February 19th and 20th.
