Any public school teacher, administrator, or board member may attend professional learning sessions hosted by an Alabama Regional Inservice Center (ARIC).How to Register
All professional learning sessions are listed in PowerSchool Professional Learning. Educators can register for sessions using PowerSchool Professional Learning accounts. All professional learning sessions have hyperlinked registration links. Look for the Register Here wording under each session. Contact district PowerSchool personnel or district technology administrators for assistance with accessing the platform. Retired educators no longer with a school district or without a local education agency (WOLEA) can send a support request to PLadmin@alsde.edu for support.

ELA Course of Study Exploration
Description: This session will provide an opportunity for ELA teachers to become more familiar with the ELA Course of Study by exploring grade-level standards with colleagues. Teachers will gain an understanding of the progression of skills from kindergarten to twelfth grade, while also noting the standards specific to the grade level they teach. While familiarizing themselves with the standards, teachers will engage in grade-level collaboration in order to unpack the standards and build relevant lesson plans ready to use upon their return to their classroom.

Text-Dependent Writing in ELA
Description: While text-dependent writing should occur in all content areas, this session will focus on how best to incorporate skills necessary to ensure students are using text-derived evidence to support their writing within their ELA class. Relevant and ready-to-use strategies will be the focus of the session. Teachers will also have facilitated collaboration time with colleagues in order to build upon strategies to better implement cognitively complex texts for all grade levels. This session will assist teachers with preparation for standardized exams, but the focus will be quality Tier I instruction.
*ELA teachers of grades 4-12 are the target audience.

Engaging Students in Reading Instruction in All Content Areas
Description: Engaged students become proficient students. Knowing this, how does one ensure instruction is creating student-centered learning? This session will provide strategies to support teachers in involving students in their own learning. The focus will be for all content areas in grades 4-12 with an emphasis on reading instruction. Teachers will look at their literacy standards from the AL Course of Study and create a plan to embed engaging best practices into their classroom Tier I instruction.

The Daily Grind to Prepare for the ACT Writing Exam
Description: The ACT Writing exam consists of students penning a first draft of an argument essay, so it is imperative for teachers to designate daily time for students to construct, deliver, and reflect upon individual arguments within the classroom. The writing portion of the exam provides an opportunity for timid and anxious test takers to shine by illustrating the wealth of knowledge swirling in their brains. Teachers must facilitate opportunities for verbal and written communication among students in order for this knowledge to escape from a student’s brain to the pages of an exam. This session will focus on understanding the ACT Writing scoring rubric, the prompt & task, and the skills needed for students to reach a benchmark score. While there will be mention of test preparation, all strategies will be considered quality Tier I instruction that should occur throughout the school year.

Title: HELP! I Need EVEN MORE Multisensory Strategies in My Toolbox 2.0
Description: According to Judith Birsh, author of Multisensory Teaching and Basic Language Skills, “Although teachers may emphasize the use of multisensory strategies as pivotal for student success, these strategies are not always well understood.” This hands-on, interactive session will define multisensory strategies and provide teachers a few more ideas that can be added to their current practices. ACAP Cognitive Complexity Training (Grades 2-8)
Description: The primary purpose of the cognitive complexity training is to learn about the cognitive complexity embedded with the Text-Dependent Writing prompts included in the English Language Arts ACAP Summative.
In this training, participants will analyze 3 text-dependent writing prompts across grades and genres to examine the type of thinking, action, or knowledge that must be demonstrated and communicated for a student to accomplish a task. Participants will discuss classroom application and review additional supporting resources provided by DRC.

Neuhaus Training for Educators: Language Enrichment
Title: Neuhaus Training for Educators: Language Enrichment
Description: This class provides teachers 36 hours of training in the Science of Reading through opportunities to plan instruction to meet student needs in the context of their classroom while gaining knowledge on reliable reading and spelling patterns, development of oral language and world knowledge, and metacognitive strategies for comprehension. The coaching staff at Neuhaus will follow up with each participant during the school year to assist you as you apply what you have learned in your classroom to best fit the needs of your students. The first Cohort of teachers who participated in this professional learning opportunity increased their knowledge of the science of reading by an average of 19% over the course of the class. A prerequisite to this course is Reading Readiness 6 hours, on-demand- pre-recorded, and must be completed prior to September 1, 2023. Research has demonstrated the importance of phonological awareness, letter recognition, and oral language in the acquisition of reading and spelling skills. Participants will learn foundational skills that are necessary to develop fluent readers and accurate spellers and receive hands-on, multi-sensory activities to teach and reinforce these skills. This virtual class provides remote learning with real-time instruction from Neuhaus instructors.

The Power of Words: Building Vocabulary Proficiency in the Elementary Grades
Description: Why is vocabulary instruction important? The power of words! Description: This professional learning will provide K-5 educators with a deeper dive into the 2021 ELA COS. Description: Most educators are overwhelmed by the amount of digital information in their lives. In these two sessions, one tailored for administrators and one for teachers, we will focus on three core tools and how to use them effectively:
Digital task list: Participants will be able to create a free account in “Remember The Milk” and begin entering real commitments, repeating tasks, and even learn how to assign tasks to others in this hands-on environment.
Email: Participants will learn a strategy for getting email empty each day and see how email works in conjunction with the digital task list. We’ll also demonstrate and practice a number of time-saving strategies so educators spend less time in email and more time on making a difference for students.
Digital Notes/Digital Documents: In today’s world, much of our information is never printed. We simply need to be able to add to it, retrieve it, and share it, and do so from any connected device. Participants will be introduced to Evernote, create accounts for free, and learn strategies for how best to use it. We will also explore organizing Google Drive (and that dreaded “Shared with Me” folder).
As time permits, we will also cover questions educators have. For example, ChatGPT is a topic of growing concern.

Description:
Are you a principal/assistant principal who attended the initial training for the Alabama Teacher Observation Tool, but left unsure how to accurately rate teachers’ instructional practices? As an administrator, it is important to have a deep understanding of the ATOT and how to use it effectively to provide meaningful feedback that helps improve teacher performance. Youth Mental Health First Aid
Description: Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach teachers and school staff how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Participants will receive 8.0 hours credit.

Trauma Informed Instruction
