Notes from the Principaws#10 May
Mr. Vince Sette and Mrs. Nicole McQuate
Welcome to 2022
Can you believe we have made it to the last month of the 2021-2022 school year? "Time flies when you are having fun" has never been more accurate. Fear not, as we will continue to provide the Principaw Newsletter in the months and years to come.
I cannot thank the students, staff, and families enough for such a great first year at the helm of the elementary. Before we end the year, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read through the update from the Principaw's below.
The office is currently open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm at the elementary.
STUDENT FEE UPDATES
Please turn in your student fees to the office as soon as possible. We will send reminders out, but your partnership and diligence regarding the fees are greatly appreciated. The fees go directly to your child and help provide consumable materials for their education. Please call the office and ask for Mrs. McQuate or me directly if you have any questions.

May Transportation Department Updates
Hey May!
May is an exciting month for transportation with May 2nd being National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day and May 15-21being National Transportation Week. Our drivers love what they do. We plan to celebrate them for all of their hard work and dedication to the safety of our students.
We are still busy this month with field trips and sports events but all of our buses passed their inspections in April so we are well prepared!
If you have any questions, you may reach out to Lori Weinman (Transportation Coordinator) via email (lweinman@norwayne.net) or phone call (330-435-1141)
Transportation Trivia Question for May: (Look for the answer somewhere in the newsletter)
Do you know what marks the beginning of the school zone and the 20mph speed limit?
NES CHESS CLUB
Congrats to Josiah and a big thank you to Mr. Miller for helping lead the chess club this year. We look forward to more chess in the years to come!
Transportation Trivia Answer for May:
Answer: There are markings on the road that say SCHOOL. When the school zone lights are flashing all drivers should slow to 20 mph when they get to the SCHOOL line marked on the road and continue at that speed until the "end school zone" sign.
2021-2022 NES BREAKFAST and LUNCHES
Norwayne Masks Update as of May 1, 2022
- For the 2021-2022 school year, students/families will have the option to choose what they would like to do with mask-wearing when on Norwayne grounds. This option to choose now includes school transportation which was updated by the district starting March 1, 2022.
- The only exceptions remain with students who have a positive case in the family but are showing no symptoms. Students with a positive case in the family with that family member isolating may continue to come to school as long as they are not exhibiting symptoms as long as they wear a mask at all times.
****Please note that we can update the mask stance at any time as we continue to listen and follow mandates from the governor and health departments as new information is made available during the pandemic.
We thank everyone so much for helping comply with all the changes that have taken place. Together we can accomplish so much and continue to make Norwayne amazing!

MAY STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Suppes
- My current position at NES is Secretary. I have also worked in a Clerical Aide position, a Student Aide position, and a Preschool Aide position.
I have been employed with Norwayne Local Schools for a total of 19 years. I have lived in the area all my life and graduated from Norwayne High School. My three children attended our schools and also graduated from Norwayne High School. I currently have grandchildren that attend NES and NMS.
- I feel very fortunate to work in such a wonderful atmosphere. When I come to work in the morning I am always greeted with a smile and kind words. I love working around young children; they have so much energy and personality. We also have a wonderful staff, amazing students and a very caring community who are always there to support our schools. No two days are ever the same.
- One day while Mr. Leatherman was visiting NES, he stopped in the office on his way out. One of our kindergarten friends had stopped in the office to say “hi.” We told the kindergarten student to go over and shake Mr. Leatherman’s hand. So Mrs. Sparks walks him over to do the introductions. Then Mrs. Sparks tells Mr. Leatherman the student’s name and then introduces the student to Mr. Leatherman explaining that he is Mr. Sette’s boss, as Mr. Sette is our boss. Then the student asks Mr. Leatherman what he does and Mr. Leatherman replies “Oh I walk around and talk to people,” and without skipping a beat the student says “Oh so you pretty much do nothing!” Well,of course we all chuckled and Mr. Leatherman replied “I’ve been told that”. Kids DO say the funniest things.
- Always try to be kind and considerate of others. Be the best you can be!
Mrs. West
- Cross-Categorical K-5 Teacher
- 14 years at Norwayne/23 years total teaching
- I love that I have students for multiple years and can form lifelong relationships with my students and their families. I am grateful that I live in the district and frequently see my students outside of the classroom in the community and at sporting events. Most of all, I love the Paraprofessionals I get to work with because every day we work as a team to meet the needs of our students.
What is a funny moment during your time at Norwayne?
- When we were back at Sterling Elementary, I had to move my desk four times in one school year because the ceiling tiles were so old and kept falling on my head.
- Remember that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. Learn to use your strengths in a positive way and learn to be excepting of others' strengths and weaknesses as well. Everyone has strengths to bring to any team.
Mrs. Lonsbury
- I am currently a ParaPro. I haven't had any other positions during my tenure at Norwayne.
I have been at Norwayne for 16 years.
What is something you love about your job?
I love hearing funny stories from the kids each day!
What is a funny moment during your time at Norwayne?
One funny story from my time at Norwayne was actually at Sterling Elementary. A student asked me to swing with him, of course I said yes. While swinging in mid air, it broke and next thing I knew I was on the ground. I looked to the other teacher and asked if they saw that. Then we all erupted in laughter.
Any words of advice for our students?
- My advice to the students would be to treat others how you want to be treated.
