CSCS Parent Smore Update!
December 15, 2019
A Message from Mr. Anderson
This upcoming week is a whirlwind of amazing student celebrations and performances at our school! After an amazing 5th and 6th grade chorus/band concert last week we are gearing up for the Board of Education visit tomorrow, classroom parties and celebrations, and most of all though, the PreK-3rd grade Holiday Christmas Play!
This year Mr. Flanagan and his group of helpful elves (parents and classroom teachers!) are pulling out all of the stops with "Elfis and the Frozen Princess!" - That is not a typo:) "Elfis" as in Elvis is in the building... just in Elf form!
Please note the attached Parent note below that went home with all primary students and know that we will not be allowing parents to enter the building and find seats until 8:05am after the students have dismissed to class. We would also like to thank everyone in advance for your patience and understanding as this event is the largest attended event we have all year and it requires folks to sit close together and be flexible!
Parent Survey - Below is a button to click on to complete a parent survey regarding school communication and support of our school. If you could take the time to complete this it would be very helpful for us at school to continue to grow and always improve to be the best we can be for our children!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

A Note from Mrs. DeCamp
As we approach our final week of school in December, it is surreal to think about how fast the school year seems to be going! We have had a great start to this year and look forward to many exciting and rigorous learning experiences when we all return in January 2020!
As a reminder, school attendance continues to be incredibly important for all students, especially on half days! Teachers work to change their schedules on half days of school to make sure that their students can still receive instruction in both ELA and Math. If your child misses that learning, it puts them behind. Let's work together to keep school attendance an important priority and to have students in school learning as much as we can!
As always, if you have any questions or would like to sit down to problem solve with us regarding attendance, please don't hesitate to reach out! We are here to help!
Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

ROARS!
We had an amazing assembly the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Break to kickstart a positive ROARS flow in December. We had an assembly for the primary and an assembly for the intermediate level. We drew Panther Paws and the grand prize winners got movie tickets to Crystal Cinemas!
We also revealed the next activity for Panther Palooza and Mr. Anderson and Mrs. DeCamp were able to model hard work and perseverance with the "Bring Sally Up" challenge doing push-ups and squats with the kids!
Our big focus was on "listening to adult directions the first time" making connections to showing respect and being safe.
Check out the pictures from the assembly in the Celebrations Section of this newsletter!
From The School Counselor's Desk
Holidays are always a potential time where a flood of uncomfortable thoughts, actions and feelings come up for adults and children. It is completely normal and for our children it can be a hard time to work through on their own. I would like to give you another strategy to use to help your children work through these uncomfortable thoughts, actions and feelings over the holidays. It is called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. It can help anyone to refocus on the present moment instead of experiencing uncomfortable symptoms. When you use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique you will be taking in the details of your surroundings using each of your senses. All you will do is go down the list on the left of the below picture asking your child to name a certain number of things using their 5 senses. If needed, you will help them out to get them through each one. You can always do this over if the child needs more time to refocus.
Sincerely,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving break! As we begin December, it comes with a few reminders. We are well into cold weather as we have experienced our first snow day of the year. Please make sure all students have a coat, hat and gloves in case we go outside for recess or the After-School Program. If you need any of these items, please contact me at Ext. 3105.
Operation Greater Joy’s elves are very busy making sure everyone enrolled has a very Merry Christmas! Remember the days you can come pick up your items are December 17th, 18th, and 19th during school hours. Please call before hand so someone will be expecting your arrival.
If you are not receiving but would like to participate in the BackPack Program, we have an alternate/waiting list. When positions open, we can add you. Contact me at Ext. 3105 for more information.
Our Shop with A Cop Program has chosen two winners. Daisy N. and Daniel G.. This is an honor as each name entered was recommend by staff at Campbell Savona Elementary School who recognize these students continually meet their goals academically. They are responsible, respectful and kind to their peers. Congratulations and enjoy the shopping trip!
Every month a name gets drawn from the Random Acts of Kindness jar in my office. Just a quick update on the winners so far. October’s winner was Brooklyn A, and November’s winner is Willow K. Each winner picks a prize out of the RAK basket. All names throughout the school year will be placed in the final RAK Jar for a Grand Prize at the end of the school year!
Don’t forget, all Lost and Found items get donated at the end of the month. If your child has lost an item, please remind them to look in the lost and found. Or you may come look at any time!
Remember, if you work hard and be kind, amazing things will happen…. pass it on!

Diving Deeply into the new ELA Standards and Learning More About Social-Emotional Learning for Children & Safety Response Training!
- Alignment of the new ELA State Standards - The New York State Department of Education has been on a 2 year journey to revise the standards. Our teachers engaged in learning more about them and how to report them on school report cards next year.
- Social Emotional Learning - Our essential area teachers and counselors engaged in a new resource called the Social-Emotional Playbook to learn strategies of how to engage students and build relationships within their learning.
- Emergency Response Training - Our School Resource Officer, Dave Dubois, coordinated with local law enforcement to bring in a training for our teachers in emergency response to an injury. This training will help them utilize the emergency response kits in their classrooms should they ever be needed.
Please always know that our desire to continually improve and grow applies to everyone in our school family!
