Hello, Castle View Families:
First of all, I hope that you and your families have a safe, happy and healthy Thanksgiving. When I reflect about the things I'm grateful for, being a member of this extraordinary community is among the top of the list. I know how lucky I am to work with professionals who care deeply about their students and invest their energy and time into creating learning experiences that grow them as scholars and people. I also know how lucky we all are to be a part of your kids' stories-- to witness them doing incredible things, taking such good care of one another, and making themselves and their world better. It is a gift to be a Sabercat.
On November 2, the CVHS School Accountability Committee heard advocacy from several members of our community and had extensive conversation about the school district's common high school bell schedule. The committee asked me to share this statement with you regarding that meeting and subsequent clarification from DCSD leaders:
Thank you CVHS community for providing SAC with your feedback on the district's unified bell schedule. SAC read all the survey responses, emails, and listened to the community viewpoints from students, parents and teachers. The majority of the feedback was advocating to keep the current block schedule at CV. We provided all of the feedback to Dr. Templeton, CV Principal, as well as to the DCSD Superintendent, Erin Kane, and Assistant Superintendent, Danny Winsor. Despite the SAC advocacy, the district requires all high schools to adhere to a common bell schedule. Mr. Winsor confirmed to our SAC vice chair by phone that at no time has CV or Dr. Templeton had the choice to opt out of this district initiative. SAC supports the community and administration in making the transition as smooth and effective as possible.
I know that many of us feel anxious and disappointed about this change to our school and the way our students have grown accustomed to learning. Please trust that the CVHS staff is committed to making this as positive for students as possible, and I am happy to talk through any concerns or questions you have.
Our counseling team is beginning to meet with students regarding their academic plans and helping them prepare for registration. They also welcome your questions and will do everything they can to clarify for your students what this transition will look like for them.
Below, you will find the frequently asked questions our students have asked about the schedule, with answers that I hope help clarify. If you have others that aren't answered there, please don't hesitate to call or write.
As always, thank you for sharing your kids with us. It is our honor to serve them.

New Schedule FAQ
Q: Why are we doing this?
A: To create opportunities for all DCSD high schoolers to access programming like Career and Technical Education, Advanced Placement, and Concurrent Enrollment courses outside their home campus. Examples of this programming include Cosmetology at Highlands Ranch High School, Automotive at Douglas County and Ponderosa High Schools, Fire Science at Rock Canyon High School, the extraordinary Engineering and Journalism courses here at CV, and pathways that will open at the DCSD Legacy Campus next Fall. It also includes Advanced Placement classes like Calc 3, Differential Equations, AP Physics, etc. Further, a common schedule allows our post-secondary partners at Arapahoe Community College to align their schedule and offer students CE courses both at CV and at the new STURM Campus.
Q: With this change in the schedule, will we be able to acquire enough credits to graduate?
A: Absolutely. Our counselors will make sure that students complete their graduation requirements.
Q: How will we manage the homework from 7 classes instead of 4?
A: Because of the nature of an alternating block, students will have a similar nightly homework load, completing their assignments for the classes that will meet the next day. Further, the block periods will be longer than our current blocks, allowing teachers to build in additional work time during the school day.
Q: Can we still double up in math and world language?
A: As long as there are enough students interested in this option, we can create double up options in both math and world language. I show a sample of what that schedule could look like in the video linked below.
Q: Will I still be able to access Arapahoe Community College and Concurrent Enrollment classes?
A: Yes. In fact, because of the increased flexibility of the 7 period schedule, it may prove easier to enroll in multiple concurrent enrollment courses.
Q: What would my current schedule look like on this new schedule?
A: A sample 10th and 11th grade schedule is pictured below, with what the schedule looks like now and how it would look like next year.
Q: Can we still have off periods?
A: Yes.
Q: Can we meet with our counselors to talk through how our academic plan will work in this new schedule?
A: Of course. Counselors are planning to meet with Juniors during Term 2 to start planning for registration this winter.
