NO SCHOOL - Monday, January 17th Martin Luther King Jr. Day
A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
Each week presents itself with new challenges! Although the "rules" are different and quarantine and isolation policies are lessened, we request that you continue to keep your child home from school if they are sick. We are finding that students are "testing negative" so they come to school, only to get tested when their symptoms don't improve and they are then "positive". This exposes so many others-students and staff. In order to keep us "open", we need staff who are healthy! Please do your part and help by keeping those who are sick at home. If someone in your home is positive, it's likely that your child will end up positive...so please keep a close eye on them and consider keeping them home. If unsure about what to do, just call and we will walk through things with you. Safety of all is our most important focus!
If your child is tested over the weekend and is positive, please email Mrs. Bookman and Mrs. Hurd. We will need to notify families over the weekend.
Because of the rise in cases, we have decided to delay the start of LEAD groups. We will reconsider them in February. We also are not going to reschedule the Holiday Program that was canceled in December. Yesterday our 2nd and 5th graders recorded the program and it will be shared with those families as soon as it's all edited and ready to go! We thank Mrs. Estell, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Tannert for working hard to get this out to parents.
Stay warm this weekend!
Mrs. Bookman

Temperatures are starting to drop and we would like to pass along some details about recess, so you can plan accordingly. We will go out to recess if the temperature is above 20 degrees. If you are in need of a new coat for your child, we do have some that were donated and would be happy to help your child with a new winter coat. Please call or write a note to Mrs. Bookman if we can help! We would like to remind parents that there are certain areas on the playground where snow boots are required and other areas where snow pants and boots are required during the winter months. If they do not wear the proper attire for these areas, they will have to stay on the blacktop area. Thank you in advance for your help.

Strategies that Teach Kids to Set Goals and Help Them Succeed
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and a great start to the new year! As we look to this new year and setting goals Dr. Michele Borba, Educational Psychologist and recipient of the National Educator Award, offers parenting strategies that teach kids to set goals and to help them succeed.
She identifies seven steps:
1. Define what a goal is. An easy way is to link it to an area of interest. For example, a football player is aiming for a touchdown. It is something to shoot for. Explain goal setting as planning what you need to work on.
2. Share your own goals. Let your children know that you have dreams, and that you recognize that you may need to work on some things in order to achieve them.
3. Help kids create their “dream list”. Help them create a list that includes those things that they actually have the power to make happen. Then spend time together discussing those dreams. Consider what skills are necessary. Does your child need help in order to succeed?
4. Tailor the goal to your child. Have a first time goal-setter work on a goal that can be achieved within a week. Some examples are making their bed every day, reading a book, brushing teeth without being reminded, getting a strike in bowling.
5. Help your child think through steps to success. Some children need to write down steps. The more they think about their goal, and identify what they need to do to achieve it, the greater the chance they will succeed.
6. Track your child’s progress. Use the fridge to show stickers or stars when steps are completed.
7. Celebrate! As goals are achieved, celebrate as a family

CHILD FIND
Identification of Children with Disabilities
The Field Local School district is in the process of locating, evaluating, and identifying children from birth to age 21, residing in the district, who may be entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), including special education and related aids and services, pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504).
Children eligible for FAPE under the IDEA are those with disabilities such as Autism,
Multiple Disabilities, Deaf-Blindness, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment, Speech or Language Impairment, Orthopedic Impairment, Emotional Disturbance, Intellectual Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury or Specific Learning Disability.
Children eligible for FAPE under Section 504 include children who have a physical or
mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. If you know of a child who may have a disability or a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, or if you would simply like additional information, please contact
Megan Longfellow, Director of Special Services at (330) 673-2659 or email her at megan.longfellow@fieldlocalschools.org
Dog License
It’s that time of year to purchase a license for your dog. Applications for a new license may be picked up at Suffield Elementary. If you already have a dog license, you probably received your renewal notice mailed to your home. Your completed new application or renewal, along with payment, may be dropped off at our school. Licenses are $15 per dog until January 31, 2022. After that, under state law, the cost will go to $30 per dog. Please make checks payable to Portage County Dog Warden.

Birthday Treats-MUST be prepackaged, ONLY
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.
