Growing Leaders: Walking Kindergarten and First Grade Siblings to Class
Our Growing Leaders philosophy starts with our youngest students. Many of our older siblings are demonstrating their leadership skills by walking their younger siblings to class in the morning. This helps them build their leadership qualities, but does not strengthen the resiliency and independence of their younger siblings who are being walked to class.
One strategy to build independence and self-confidence in our Kindergarten and First grade students is for them to work towards independently walking themselves to their classroom without the assistance of their older sibling. Students will be able to continue walking KG and 1st grade siblings, (2nd grade and older should already be walking to class without an escort) until the end of first quarter, which ends October 11th.
Beginning October 15th, all students will be expected to successfully and independently walk themselves to their classroom. Of course, as always, there are staff and Safety Patrol assigned to locations the entire way throughout the hallways who are ready to assist. In preparation for this date, please encourage your helping student, to slowly fade out their assistance, each day so their younger sibling will be prepared to walk themselves.
They can do it! Your older students will be proud that they instilled the confidence in their younger sibling and the younger student will be so proud when they have the confidence to walk to class on their own.
Our Neighbors
Building a Positive Digital Footprint & Social Media Responsibilities
Over the next two weeks, our SRO, school counselor and administration will visit every fourth and fifth grade classroom to discuss Social Media and being a good digital citizen. Most of our content will be coming from Common Sense Media, which is an independent, research backed non-profit organization whose mission is to help families and educators provide a safe digital environment.
Upon completion of the presentation, students will have access to a Google Classroom, which will include the resources used as well as an assignment for follow up and reflection. Students who submit the most authentic and outstanding assignment submissions will work on a small Student Leaders committee, for the purpose of creating a "Junior" version of using electronic devices responsibly, for third grade students.
