June Educational Luncheon Reminder
With Cara Fairfax, LCSW
Strategies for Facilitating Postpartum Support Groups
What makes a support group successful? Why do some groups never seem to get off the ground and others become beacons of light for the members? How does the group facilitator contribute to the group culture and nurture the members and the group as a whole? Group facilitation is a skill; the facilitator must be able to ‘read’ their members, manage interpersonal dynamics in a way that honors and protects the members, be able to step back far enough to let the group run itself, but be willing to step in to keep it on track. This talk will give strategies on how do this in a helpful, supportive, educational and ‘fun’ way that keeps the members coming back.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the important components necessary to facilitate a successful post-partum and maternal mental health support group.
Participants will be able to identify the therapeutic skills necessary for creating a safe environment for group members.
Participants will be able to identify how to involve dads in post-partum support to meet the needs of new/growing family
Cara Fairfax, LCSW, has been working as an early childhood and family therapist for more than 10 years, and has been facilitating many types of groups for parents and children as one aspect of a family’s overall care. Cara works for Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns as a Perinatal Social Worker, and facilitates a very successful Post-partum support group. She is also in private practice and runs a group for mothers of toddlers and preschoolers who are coping with depression and anxiety.
