Important Information

We have taken a short break from our normal programs to work on writing our class books! Our theme for 1st-3rd grade is "If I had 3 wishes..." 4th grade students didn't have a theme, but had the opportunity to write original stories. Students wrote a rough draft, a final copy, and created an illustration. All students had the opportunity to create a page for the class book, and they are very proud of their pages. More information will be coming home soon.

Parent Tip

  • While reading with your student, don't stop them right away if they make a mistake. Instead, wait until they get to the end of the sentence and see if they notice the mistake themselves. If they don't notice the mistake, repeat the sentence that they read (mistake and all) and ask if there is anything wrong with the sentence. When they do notice the mistake, encourage them to go back and try to solve the word.

First Grade- Reese's

Thanks to lots of hard work on the part of your students, we have increased our level! We are now reading books on a Level F! This is still a little behind our goal of Level G text, but we are really excited to get closer. Parents, thank you for reading at home with your child every night so they get that extra reading practice, it's really made a difference!

First Grade- Hawkeyes

The Hawkeyes are still practicing addition skills. We have learned the strategies count all, count on, doubles, and now we are learning which strategy to use and when to use it in order to reach the correct answer. We have also worked hard to memorize the simpler problems up to 10+10!

We have also started working on our addition fact fluency using the Xtra Math website. For extra practice, have your student log in and play at home!

To log in to Xtramath.org, you will need:

my email address: Jessica.Drake@Raypec.org

your child's first name: Firstname

your child's pin number: Your child might have already memorized their four number pin, but if not, please email me and I will be happy to send it to you!

Second Grade- KC Chiefs & USA Legos

Some students have switched groups, so we now have the KC Chiefs and the USA Legos working on second grade skills. Both groups are still working with the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention program. The KC Chiefs have just started working on Level J text, and the USA Legos are finishing up the Level J text, and will be moving to Level K text soon. By this time, second grade students should be reading at a Level K.

The students in these groups are working particularly hard to listen to themselves while reading, in order to hear any incorrect words and correct themselves if necessary. The goal is that they realize when a mistake has been made without an adult pointing it out to them.

Second Grade- Spidermen

The new program we were trying didn't work out, so we are back to working with Xtramath to master our addition skills, and Sumdog to practice the skills we have already learned.

You are still welcome to log in and play at home.

Third Grade- "Candy"lopes

Our group worked on reading Level N books during the month with the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention program. Third Grade students at this point should be reading at a Level O.

Third Grade- Cheetahs

Students in this group have been using the Reading A-Z program, reading at a Level M. Third Grade students at this point should be reading at a Level O. The Reading A-Z program focuses on a single book at a time. During that time we build vocabulary, practice decoding and comprehension skills, think critically about the story, and finish with a comprehension quiz. We have finished reading Art Around Us, where we learned about facts and opinions. We are currently reading The Best Guess, where we will learn about a sequence of events.

Third Grade- Captain America

The new program we were trying didn't work out, so we are back to working with Xtramath to master our addition skills, and Sumdog to practice the skills we have already learned.

Fourth Grade- Blue Tigers & Stars

Several students have moved around, so we've renamed out group. Also, because we've been working so hard on our book, students haven't participated in the Reading A-Z program as much recently. However, when writing stories for our class book, we have focused on: writing with a beginning, middle, and end; creating a main idea, and details that support the main idea; spelling and using conventions correctly; capitalizing the first letter in a sentence, and the first letter of a name; and using complete sentences that show a whole thought.

Students in these groups are using the Reading A-Z program. The Blue Tigers are reading at a Level Q, while the Stars are reading at a Level P. Fourth Grade students at this point should be reading at a Level S.

Fourth Grade- Thor

We are working with Xtramath to master our multiplication skills, and Sumdog to practice the skills we have already learned. You are welcome to log in and play at home.
