Highlights of the Week

The highlight of this week was undoubtedly Wednesday's COL, or for those less well initiated in the ways of SJIIES, Celebration of Learning!

It is a truly joyful time for teachers, as nothing gives us more pleasure than seeing the children in our class proudly sharing their learning with their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who came.

We would also like to thank Sam's mum Mel for coming in to talk to us about eating a balanced diet, it was an engaging session.

Maths week has provided us with a rich context in which to explore data handling. We have enjoyed contributing to the graphs placed around the Elementary School, and have been busy thinking about, and interpreting the data that we have been seeing.

Wishing everyone a peaceful weekend.

Language Arts

In reading this week we have continued to focus on the accuracy CAFE strategy of cross checking. This strategy involves checking that words match the picture, match the sounds and make sense! We have been using the Cross-Checking Song, and actions, to help us remember.

This week the children have been working on identifying the beginning, problem, solution and ending within stories.

We have been continuing our Author Study on Lynley Dodd. We have continued our focus on writing 'small moments' in detail, and have been learning about the things that authors do during the process of writing books. Thank-you for all the books that have been coming in. The children are enjoying sharing their Lynley Dodd books with their friends.

Please note, we will be finishing this Writer's Workshop Unit at the end of this term, so Friday 27th March will be the official 'Tail Day' to celebrate our wonderful writing in this unit. Details are below.

Spelling and Phonics

This week our spelling and phonics have focused on the 'long u' sound made by 'ew' and 'u_e'. (dew, tune)

We have been working on joining the letters 'ew' together and on forming the lower and uppercase 'u' this week.

Tail Day!

To celebrate the end of our Author's Study on Lynley Dodd, the children (and teachers!) will be wearing tails to school on Friday the 27th of March.

Please help your child to find/repurpose/make a tail to wear on this day. Tails can be based on characters from Lynley Dodd's books, or inspired by what is found at home.

Some suggestions:

-an old tie

-pipe cleaner with paper

This was an exciting week for Maths as we celebrated Maths Week. Our theme this year was, 'We are one, but we are many'. We celebrated how we are all individuals and special in our own ways - and our individuality was highlighted through a variety of fun graph building around the school. We got to see our similarities and differences by studying the data on the various graphs.

We have also had go at creating our own picture graphs and learning to read and interpret information on picture graphs.

IPC - We are What we Eat

This week we have been scientists and have been looking at the skill of making predictions. We have also been closely examining different fruits and vegetables, making comparisons and identifying similarities and differences.

Ask your child to explain what makes a fruit a fruit!

Virtue of the Week: Orderliness!

"Life is too complicated not to be orderly."
Martha Stewart

This week the children have been practicing showing the virtue of orderliness. We have been talking about making sure we keep our things in an orderly way, and have practiced our orderliness around the classroom! Please use the language of the virtues at home and acknowledge your child when you see them showing their orderliness!

Next week we will focusing on the virtue of Truthfulness.

Town Hall Survey

Please take part in our Town Hall survey to help the Leadership Team better understand how future Town Hall meetings and communication can be improved. It will take less than 5 minutes of your time - responses will be anonymous and results will be shared. Regardless of whether you attended the Town Hall meetings, we value your feedback!
