North Wales School Bulletin
February 12 , 2024
From The Principal's Desk
Greetings North Wales Families,
Last week we celebrated our 100th day of school, we had a food truck and we sold candy grams! This week we celebrate Valentine's Day, Ash Wednesday and students do not have school on Friday, leading into a long weekend.
This week's spirit days are:
Monday- Motiviation and Excellence Day- Words of Motivation
Tuesday- I Have a Dream- Dress like someone who inspires you
Wednesday- Share The Love- Wear Red or Pink
Thursday- Shine Bright With Acceptance - Neon/Bright Colors
Our word of the week is courage:
- Making courage a theme doesn’t mean diving in with no fear. As author Mark Twain once wrote, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear.” Committing to courage is about committing to taking steps forward, even when it’s new and uncomfortable.
As always, we thank you so much for being a part of the North Wales family!
Warmly,
Ms. Kenney
Principal

Please read the Family Information for additional details of the event.
Literacy Tip Of The Week
North Penn’s Reading Super Bowl returned after a two year hiatus. Students at North Wales were given the chance to connect and interact with some of North Penn Knights’ very own football players. Players arrived and were escorted from room to room. Within each class players read various picture books. Books that were chosen had themes of perseverance, overcoming challenges and teamwork. Super Bowl readers were North Wales’ alums Jake Finn, Patrick Walker, John Zander and Andy Tran. At the conclusion, students asked the players questions. A good time was had by ALL!
5th Grade Baking With Love Service Project
Last week our 5th graders participated in a baking with love project with the help of Ms. Jimenez and Mrs. Schaefer. Our students baked cookies that they willl share our community helpers this Monday. Here are some pictures from the event
Cultural Highlights Of The Week
February Celebrations
Black History Month
The Uptown Theater, located at 2240 North Broad Street, opened on February 16, 1929. The five-story Art Deco theater was designed by the noted architectural firm Magaziner, Eberhard and Harris, and featured a terracotta façade, high ceilings, stain-glass windows, plush carpets and velvet seats. The theater was originally owned by the Stanley Theater/Warner Brothers chain, and movie-goers included wealthy industrialists and working-class immigrant families that resided along the bustling North Broad Street corridor.
In the decades following the Great Depression, with the collapse of Philadelphia’s manufacturing base, and rising unemployment and crime, many white residents moved out of Philadelphia and into the suburbs. By the 1950s, North Philadelphia had become the center of African American culture as the Black population grew significantly due to migration from southern states, and the pervasive practice of housing discrimination that limited the mobility of many African Americans to inner city neighborhoods.
In its heyday, the Uptown featured performances by Ray Charles, James Brown, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five, Patti Labelle, and the Temptations, to name a few. Comedians such as Redd Fox and Flip Wilson also performed at the Uptown Theater. The theater hosted amateur nights where local artists could compete for prizes. The Uptown was also unique in that it had its own house band. The longest tenured band director, Sam Reed, led the band from 1963 to 1971.
