A Home-School Connection
June 2020
A Message From Mrs. Blackburn:
I am certain many of you read the update from Dr. Warren last week, "District Update - Friday, June 5, 2020". If you have not, please refer to your email for the letter. As a parent and administrator in NISD, I appreciated Dr. Warren's acknowledgment of the complexity of these times and where we stand as a district. The issues we have faced as a nation over the last few months, including racism and a global pandemic, have caused me to take a hard look at both the inequalities and the potential in our own community. As I grapple personally and professionally, I immediately connect to Dr. Warren's sentiment, "We are never going to be satisfied with where we are today." Additionally, I echo his message that "All voices must be heard; hatred and racism cannot be tolerated; and our children must be the focus of everything that we do." As the summer continues to march forward (with far more questions than answers it seems), I want you to know that efforts to provide the best level of response and support possible for all staff, students, school and our community are absolutely under way.
In his letter, Dr. Warren stated, "… we are going to continue to strive to better ourselves, our schools, and Northwest ISD as a whole." Seven Hills has been afforded the opportunity to partner with The Leader in Me over the last four years. There is a connection between being a Leader in Me school and how we will continue to progress as individuals, a school and a community. Essential to the Leader in Me is the belief that everyone has worth and potential and that anyone can be a leader. Additionally, as leaders we are called to recognize and encourage the greatness in others—whether family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues. We are passionate about these beliefs. As a Leader in Me school, we are also equipped with tools to support academic growth and achievement, as well as social emotional development. Social emotional development helps us learn and apply the skills, knowledge and even attitudes necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The principles, beliefs, and tools within the Leader in Me are a compliment to the efforts and actions of NISD related to social emotional learning, and are an example of one tool we can access in the pursuit to better ourselves.
The founding Leader in Me principal, Muriel Summers, said,
"We only get one chance to prepare children for a world none of us can possibly predict. What are we going to do with that one chance?"
One chance. We have one amazing chance. As educators and parents we have an incredible responsibility and awesome opportunity to help our children reach their full potential as leaders of their own lives and leaders in the community. I look forward to partnering with you to make our school and our community a safe, respectful, responsive, and empowering place for our students and families. Together we will accomplish GREATNESS.
Together We Lead,
Kim Blackburn, Principal
Please Make Sure You Register for the 2020 - 2021 School Year:
Completing the returning and new student registration for next year is very important to our planning. If you have not yet registered for next year, please take time to complete the process. When completing the registration process, all proof of residency documentation can be sent to our Office Manager, Lacy Denman, at lacy.denman@nisdtx.org If you have any difficulty logging in to the Home Access Center to complete the returning student registration, please contact Lacy Denman or me. Thank you for your assistance in helping us plan for the 2020 - 2021 school year.
We are working on a plan for Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-up events to possibly begin in July. We will send email communication, post on campus websites and social media as updates become available.
Summer Meals Offered at Prairie View Elementary!
Northwest ISD’s regular summer meal program will take place throughout June at two campuses, using a grab-and-go format for families to quickly pick up food.
The program, which offers free meals for children ages 18 and younger, take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from June 1 to June 30. Each Thursday, a Friday meal will also be provided. Families can pick up meals at Love Elementary School, located at 16301 Elementary Drive in Justin, or Prairie View Elementary School, located at 609 F.M. 3433 in Rhome.
Families who participated in Northwest ISD’s school closure meal program during remote learning are asked to reuse their vehicle tag for quick deliveries during the summer meal program.
P-EBT System Now Available
The state of Texas and federal government have opened the P-EBT (or Pandemic Electronic Benefit Program) process for qualifying families in need to seek food assistance, with information about the program now available at this link.
Each state handles its own P-EBT process, with the state of Texas opening its process the first week of June. Northwest ISD has sent this information to families who qualify for the program, which includes children who received SNAP food benefits in March 2020 as well as children who are certified for free or reduced-priced meals during the 2019-20 school year.
P-EBT provides eligible families with a one-time payment for each child to assist with children who have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-priced school meals.
The Texas P-EBT application is open until June 30, 2020. Families who received SNAP benefits for the month of March 2020 do not need to apply as they are automatically entered into the program. Families whose children were certified for free or reduced-priced meals during the 2019-20 school year can apply at this link.

NISD Fine Arts Enrichment: The goal of the Summer Fine Arts Academy is to provide high quality, continuing summer education classes in the arts for the students in our communities. NISD Sports Camps are also beginning to open up. For more information visit the NISD Athletics Page.
30-30-30 Word Parts Practice:
- When reading a book try hunting for words with different word parts. You could make a chart to break apart these words. How fun would it be to see how many new words you have learned at the end of the summer?
- Take the flash cards and build new words. After building the word, make sure you define it using the meaning of the word parts.
