The Atkins diet is centered around frozen meals and other products containing low net carbs. When an individual starts the program, the company promises that you may "lose up to 15 pounds in two weeks!" During "induction", the first phase of the diet, you may only consume 20 or less net carbs a day. You must also consume 8 glasses of water each day, and any kind of alcohol is not allowed. When combined with exercise, reports of 5-10 lbs of weight lost per week was not uncommon. However, the amount of pounds a user may lose has more to do with wether or not they follow the directions of the diet thoroughly and also depends on metabolism, so when reading "loose up to 15 lbs in 2 weeks!", users must be aware that that's not always the case and they should be prepared for that.
"Foster’s team found that the participants lost significantly more weight on the Atkins diet (at six months, 15.4 pounds on Atkins versus 4.2 pounds on the low-fat diet). Even more important, the Atkins dieters registered greater increases in “good” cholesterol (HDL) and greater decreases in triglycerides (fats in the blood) than those following the conventional diet." -upenn.edu
