Last week for the book fair!

While you're home this week, make sure to visit the book fair. There'll be no crowds and no parking issues. You can shop online from home! There are choices for various ages, interests, and price points, so you'll find a little something for everyone. The picture above shows just a few of the items available. Download the Bookfair Room slide below. It has all kinds of live links as well as an interactive brochure. The timing should allow everyone to stock up for reading over Winter break. Have fun shopping, and don't delay! The book fair ends November 28. Proceeds benefit our school.

HOLIDAY SCRIP Program has gone ONLINE!

Please place your HOLIDAY *SCRIP ORDERS by Monday, 11/29/21, using the RAISERIGHT app on your smartphone. Pick up will be in the school office on or after 12/6/21. Remember to share this information with your friends and family, so everyone can help support our school!

*Scrip is a gift card fundraising program. When our community members purchase a gift card, a percentage of the purchase is returned to our school. You purchase the gift cards at face value and the vendor gives a percentage of each purchase to Sycamore. To order via the app, follow these steps:

  1. Download the RaiseRight app on our smartphone.
  2. Select “Join a Program”
  3. Enter Sycamore’s enrollment code AEFE49A43L158
  4. Create your account
  5. Follow the instructions in the app to start earning for our school. If you choose to pay with a credit card or using your bank account directly, there is a small service fee. However, if you choose the option “Pay Coordinator Directly” there is no fee. You simply place your order and pay by cash, check or Zelle when you pick up your Scrip in the school office.

In addition to purchasing through RaiseRight, we have the following local Scrip available for purchase in the office: Rhino Records, Stater Bros, Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Wolfe’s. If you would like to purchase local scrip, please call the office or email Tina Hensley at

East Courtyard Garden Updates

We are excited to announce that work on the east courtyard garden (corner of 8th and Harvard) will soon be underway! Ben McCoy, Landscape Architect and father of Llewyn (K) and Harris (2nd), helped us develop a warm, inviting design that includes areas for native plants, raised beds for vegetables, pots for a community driven succulent garden, a new oak tree, an outdoor sink and counter, seating with shade umbrellas, and standing tables under the shade of a sycamore tree. Claremont Unified School District will soon be helping us prepare the site, and then we are eager to get families and students involved in installing the garden. Generous donations have come from Sustainable Claremont and the Sycamore Governance Council, and we appreciate the continuing support of Sycamore families through school fundraisers (BeLeafing, Sycamore gear sales, cookie jars, etc.), so that we are able to fully fund this project that will benefit current and future students. If you are interested in volunteering and have not already expressed interest in doing so, please email Elise Ferree ( You may also make direct donations to the garden. You may send a check to the school office or direct a donation through Zelle under We ask that you add a notation in the memo to specify the donation is for the Courtyard Garden. Thank you!

Principal's Report

We're continuing with our school's commitment to school-wide social emotional learning. Our school's guiding questions, "Is it safe? Is it kind? Does it promote learning? Does it protect property and our planet?" help us to coach and encourage students to make positive choices for themselves and others.

Over the next few weeks, we will be talking about empathy and kindness. Across the grades, lessons will center around recognizing kindness, doing kind acts for others, having empathy for others, taking others' perspectives, and recognizing kind acts and empathy as elements in building and maintaining relationships. Specifically, we'll be emphasizing kind and respectful language and acts of service for others. Consider continuing these conversations with your child at home. Talk about examples of kindness and empathy within your family. Make note of them as you read books or watch movies together. Make connections between acts of kindness and their impact on the community. Thank you for your partnership with us.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Week.

Publishing House

Since the 1970's, Sycamore students have had the opportunity to publish their writing for the enjoyment of peers. We continue this tradition each year in Publishing House. Student authors join PH by choice, and with the help of adult volunteers, they create and publish a print and digital copy of their work for our school's library. Student authors should get started with the PH Sign Up Form (due December 17). The success of Publishing House is dependent upon adult volunteers. If you're interested, read the PH Support Guide and contact us.
