A Message from the Title 3 Instructional Coach-Ricardo Melendez
May is here and then soon June will be. We have approximately 29 days of instruction left. I want to take this time to let you know how much I appreciate working alongside you as we improve our craft to ensure that all our English Learners reach the goal of reclassification.
Food for Thought
Have your English Learners had an opportunity to make a presentation in your class? If not, May is the month to plan for presentations in your classroom. Let them choose topic of their interest or a topic that you are currently learning in science. This is great practice for our English Learners and a great opportunity to support and assess their English Language Development.
4th Grade ELD Standard Part.1.C .9
Expanding- Plan and deliver longer oral presentations on a variety of topics and content areas (e.g. retelling a story, explaining a science process, reporting on a current event, recounting a memorable experience, etc.) with moderate support.
What does Part 1.C.9 of the ELD standards say for your grade level?
As always, let me know how I can support you in dELD and iELD and do not hesitate to ask me any questions and or ELD resources.

Kinder Literacy Academy Re-Organization
Tuesday, May 5, 2022
1:40-2:40pm
Kudos to Kindergarten teachers for mixing their students all year during Literacy Academies. We followed the Covid guidelines in keeping our little ones safe and were still able to mix classes. We have seen amazing results in their Progress Monitoring Data. Tuesday will be the third time reorganizing this year to meet the students needs and target their instruction. They are ready for first grade! đ

Hello Teacher,
Hope everyone is doing well. Please use the links below for recommended websites to continue to support our students.
One recommended site it Starfall for our preK-3rd grade students.

The other is Read Works (3rd-6th) to support our students to cite from two different sources.

As always, thank you for everything that you do!

Notes from our STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
As a follow-up to our Engineering PD, I would like to share a couple of things. Remember that Amplify Science is a curriculum. It was designed for districts across the nation. It will not necessarily have everything that we need, no curriculum ever has. But that is okay because our instruction is driven by state standards. If you look at pages 54 â 59 of the CA Science Framework 2016 , you will find an explanation of the two Engineering Standards I reviewed with you. Also, the diagram below shows where the EDP (Engineering Design Process) utilizes the SEPâs (Science and Engineering Practices).
I also stumbled upon this website that has âEngineering-Design Aligned Curriculaâ by grade band. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will find some great hands-on activities. Here is the link:

Hang in there, folks! There are 29 days of school left, but whoâs counting, right? I know that these are the busiest days of the school year but take some time for yourself. Take in a movie, work in the garden before it gets too hot, go on a hike, read the CA Science Framework, do whatever brings you joy. A little me time now can help charge that metaphorical battery and get you through that long âclosing bulletinâ to-do list.
As always, if you have questions or need support with anything STEAM related, please shoot me an email, or come by Room 5.
Updates from Our PSW-Amanda Oyague
Hello everyone! Thank you all for your warm welcome to Malabar. If you need support with a student, please give me a call to room 10A, I'd be more than happy to assist in any way I can. I am at Malabar on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Due to confidentiality concerns, please refrain from emailing about student referrals and instead use the referral link sent.
Preparing for State Testing-SBA (Grades 3-6)
Let's focus on the following:
- ELA-focus on writing. Please make sure that students are writing independently everyday for a variety of purposes. Students will need to respond to all text types. Student should not be copying from the board or from the teacher.
- ELA-Continue to stress the need to cite from two different sources. Model and have them practice using sentence stems.
- Math-have students solve one to two sample items on a daily basis. Model your thinking as you solve problems together and then give students opportunities to solve independently.
- We are preparing for the use of the chromebooks. This week we will ensure that everyone has a cart to charge chromebooks daily. Starting the week of May 9, students will not be taking chromebooks home. They will be stored daily to ensure that all devices are in working order. Please plan on issuing homework with workbooks or paper copies.
- Planning for a positive testing environment-we need to plan to post inspirational quotes in the classroom. I will print some growth mindset examples for you to post in the classroom. Remember that we need to cover any resources students might use.
- We ordered graph paper for math scratch paper. We will deliver to classrooms so that students can begin practicing how to use graph paper.

COVID Updates
Daily Pass: 90-Day Testing Exemption
Individuals who have recovered from COVID and are approaching the end of their 90-day testing exemption will have a 2 week grace period to test. Please continue to monitor the 90-day exemption for your students. Many of them are now eligible to test. Our weekly testing has been a great tool to monitor any positive cases.
Daily Pass
All employees are required to generate their Daily Pass. I will do periodic checks to make sure that all employees have their Daily Pass. Please remember that we use this tool to ensure the safety of all staff and students.
COVID Vaccination Clinic
We will have a COVID vaccination mobile team on Tuesday, May 3 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Please share with families so they can take advantage of this event to vaccinate their family.
Summer School Student Applications
Please share with parents the summer school application. We need to make an effort to get our parents to take advantage of these learning opportunities. We also have paper copies in the office for those parents that prefer that format. Ms. Solis will also be sponsoring a summer program here at Malabar.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questions
Effective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
This week, Ms. J. Chavez will be visiting ELA and Ms. Gutierrez will visit math instruction.
