Author to Students: "Find Your Everest"
Students at Rockwood South and Crestview enjoyed a visit from Jordan Romero, the author of No Summit Out of Sight. Now twenty years old, Romero became the youngest person to reach the summit of Mount Everest when he was thirteen. He is also the youngest person to complete all Seven Summits (the highest point on each continent). During his school visits, Romero told students about his climbing adventures, the mental and physical challenges he faced, and the help & support his parents provided that made his climbs possible. He encouraged students to find their own Everest by setting goals and pursuing their dreams “one step at a time.”
Crestview Librarian Bridget DuMont said Romero's visit and the activities leading up to it provided all students with " a great school-wide learning experience [because] we were able to integrate reading, technology, and the Seven Habits." RSMS Librarian Janet Griffard added, "We were delighted to have Jordan visit our school. Students are still talking about meeting him."
Arranging and planning for Romero's visit was a collaborative effort. Instructional Technology Specialist Maria Tenny helped with a virtual reality visit to Mount Everest. CMS Principal Gary Jansen played an active role in the preparations, too.

Fifth Graders at Ballwin Create Book Snaps
During their library time this month, fifth grade students at Ballwin Elementary School created book snaps. Book snaps are a creative and engaging way for students to explore literature by expressing their ideas, making personal connections, and showing understanding. Students selected a book that is a personal favorite, chose a passage from the book that resonates with them, and created an illustration to show how the passage makes them feel. Students used Chromebook cameras to take pictures of the book covers and the passages, and then used tools in Google Drawings to create their projects. Librarian Kristin Clark facilitated the activity. She got the idea for the project from Instructional Technology Specialists Dana Todaro and Allison Hancock, who shared it when they made a presentation about Google updates at a Rockwood librarians' meeting.
