October is Bully Prevention Month
Bullying is an intentional behavior, which is typically repeated, that hurts, harms, or humiliates a student, either physically or emotionally, and can happen while at school, in the community, or online.
Below are some resources related to Bullying Prevention from StopBullying.gov.
Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying:
- Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable. Make sure kids know how to get help.
- Keep the lines of communication open. Check in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.
- Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.
- Model how to treat others with kindness and respect.
What's your child's Lexile level?
Does your 2nd-5th grade child know his or her Lexile level? Please ask them about it! Lexiles are numbers that help match readers to texts. For an ideal match of student and text for independent reading, a book should be in the Lexile range of 100L below and 50L above a student's personal Lexile level.
GaDOE recently released increased Lexile mastery levels for students at grades 3, 4, 5 that represent the midpoint of the Lexile "stretch band" for the grade level. By the end of those grade levels student Lexile levels will ideally be above 670L (3rd), 840L (4th), 920L (5th). Our overall goals for student Lexile levels are higher in most cases, but they reflect individual students. Reach out to your child's teacher or our Media Specialist, Ms. Ewing, if you would like more information about Lexiles. Or visit https://lexile.com/parents-students. Please ask your child about his or her Lexile level and his or her goal. It is an important part of their learning!
Congrats to Supt Barker! Finalist for Georgia Supt of the Year

Join us here at Elm Street from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Ticket information can be found on the links below. Volunteers are also needed to make donations and help work event shifts; details linked below. Some children and families choose to wear Halloween costumes; many others do not. If you choose to wear Halloween costumes, please keep in mind that this is a children's fall event, so it is important that costumes not frighten attending students or families. Report Cards - Celebrate Progress and Set Goals
Report Cards for 1st Nine Weeks Grading Period issued Tuesday, October 17. Be sure you check your child's report card to see his or performance. We encourage you to celebrate your child's growth and achievement. This is also a natural time to set goals for continued growth and improvement. Your child should be able to share learning goals he or she has set with the classroom teacher or other trusted adult as well.
Once again, please know there are materials in our Parent Resource Center to help you support your child's development of key reading or math skills. The center is located in the foyer by Mrs. Pope's office and materials are free for any parents or students to take home to borrow. We are your partners in learning. Please call us to conference anytime you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress. Every learner matters!
