RHS Parent Weekly Update

Riverside High School Oct. 18 - Oct. 22

Big picture

Greetings Pirate Family,

It's College Application Week and we are getting our entire school involved in the festivities. There will be a door decorating contest, a College Application Spirit Week, games, and more! We are excited that our seniors will be able to explore and apply for colleges and we also want to introduce our underclassman to additional information regarding their college options.

  • Monday is Your Future Starts Here - Wear your favorite Riverside Shirt
  • Tuesday is Dress for Success - Wear a nice outfit you would wear on an interview
  • Wednesday is Your Future is Bright - Wear sunglasses and bright colors
  • Thursday is Hats Off to A Good Education - Wear a hat day
  • Friday is College Day - Wear your favorite college t-shirt/gear

If your student is unwell or feeling sick, please keep them at home until they are symptom-free, have a negative COVID test, or have another diagnosis from a medical professional. If your student is awaiting COVID test results, please do not send them to school until you have received the results.DPS can ONLY accept a rapid test (not a rapid home test) when a child or staff member is sick or symptomatic. Anyone deemed close contact exposure must have a PCR test 5 days after exposure before returning to school or work.

All asymptomatic students and staff must have a PCR test.

If your student is unwell, please call (919-560-3965) or email (Tonya McKoy) in the main office to notify the school.

If your student should be diagnosed with COVID-19, please immediately contact the school using the above information. In addition, there are specific protocols in place that include but are not limited to quarantining, contact tracing, and notifications that must occur.

I would also like to remind parents the only authorize drop-off location for regular education students is in front of the school. Dropping students off in unauthorized areas causes issues with traffic and the overall safety of our students and school. I appreciate your attention to this matter.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us keep all students and staff safe.

Smile North Carolina - Mobile Dental Lab Feb 1-4 From Ms. Lawson

RHS Special Populations Coordinator has scheduled Smile North Carolina …the mobile dentist to come to Riverside February 1-4. Smile North Carolina, The Mobile Dentist is a full-service dental provider and considered a “Dental Home” for students. Unlike prevention only programs, The Mobile Dentist provides our students with preventative and restorative care, which is mostly fillings, to ensure they have a healthy smile. 😊 The program uses the latest technology in portable equipment, bringing dental services directly to your school. Services are performed by a local North Carolina licensed Dentist, Hygienist & dental assistant. They set up a mini dental clinic in the school. Comprehensive care includes: Complete Exam, X-rays, cleaning, fluoride, sealants, fillings, and other basic restorative care. All this in just a short time away from the classroom. This program is offered to every student.

Important: PowerSchool Information for Parents

“Returning” students are those who completed the 2020-21 school year at a DPS school. This process will allow them to review and update information on file, including transportation requests, free-and-reduced lunch, parent/student handbook, medical, etc.

COVID Testing Information

Durham Public Schools, in partnership with MAKO Medical, will begin providing weekly COVID-19 testing at school to help identify possible COVID-19 infections among students even if they are not showing any symptoms. Research has shown such testing can reduce the spread by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools.

The testing is a simple swab of the nose and not the test that tickles the brain. This is the same test families can administer from home or at local testing sites.

This is a voluntary testing process, so a parent or guardian must register their student to participate. The link to register is here and included in the Riverside Student COVID Testing Permission Letter (English/ Spanish). All testing information and results will remain confidential. In order for students to be included in the first round of testing, they must have submitted their permission forms by Sunday, October 10.

Additionally, Durham Public Schools has provided a COVID-19 Testing FAQs.

I encourage our families to register their children for this free opportunity. Together, we can keep our students safe, in their classrooms, and prevent community spread.

Social Distancing at RHS

We want all students to participate in traditional high school events such as prom, pep rallies, dances, and SMART lunch! But, for us to do this, we have to stay safe!

Ways to stay safe.

  • Stay 3 to 6 feet apart at all times.
  • Mask up! Keep your mask on while on campus.
  • During lunch, eat first (mask off) and talk second (mask on)
  • Wash your hands and carry hand sanitizer.
