PICKERINGTON ELEMENTARY NEWS

May 2020

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

This school year is ending quite differently than any we’ve ever experienced. Here at Pickerington Elementary, we miss having your children with us each day and hope you’re all staying safe and healthy while students learn remotely. The time we did spend together this year was really enjoyable, you have great kids, and we thank all of you for your continued support!

Seven students were chosen as school leaders for the month of March. Each of the students was nominated by a staff member for demonstrating one of the seven habits described in the book The Leader in Me by Stephen Covey, and in the series of books titled The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey. Each student demonstrated what a highly effective leader looks like. Students received a leadership T-shirt, a certificate, and a charm. Even though we weren’t able to honor these students in person, their pictures will be hanging in the building for a year, just as if we were in school. Congratulations to: Caitlyn W., Jah-Son W., Madden C., Addison F., Alyssa O., Erin A. and Alena V. Great job!!

None of us can predict how the summer will go, or how “school” will look for the upcoming year. Enjoy June and July as best you can, and we look forward to seeing our current kindergarten through third graders whenever we’re back together again. Good luck to our fourth graders. Make yourself and your former school proud next year in fifth grade.

Weeks 7 - 9 Blizzard Bag Pickup

The last set of Blizzard Bags will be available either Friday, May 1, 2020 or Monday, May 4, 2020 on the district website if you are printing them from home. If you need to pick up copies, we will have various hours on Monday, May 4. You may drive through from 9:00 - 10:00 am, 1:00 - 2:00 pm, or 6:00 - 7:00 pm.

Pick up will be in front of the building, in our bus line. You will follow the same procedures as when school is in session, meaning you will stay in your vehicle and if the line gets long, you'll snake the continuous line around on the Diley Road side of the building, in the parking lot. We can't back up traffic onto Long or Diley Roads.

To limit everyone's exposure and to keep to the 6 foot social distancing guidelines, we ask that you try to only have one person, an adult, in the car picking up the blizzard bags. No one will be getting out of cars, and no one is permitted in the school building. Before you get to the place where we hand you blizzard bags, someone will ask for your child/ren's name(s) and grade level(s). Those passing out the blizzard bags will do so quickly through a window on the driver's side of your car, and won't spend time talking for the sake of everyone's health.

In addition to the Monday pickup, we will have Blizzard Bags for weeks 7, 8 and 9 out in front of the school, on Tuesday, 5/5 and Wednesday, 5/6. The Blizzard Bags will be in grade level tubs/boxes. A limited number of paper copies of blizzard bags for week 7, 8 & 9 will be available at the District Office from a plastic bin just outside of the main front door. Our District Office is located at 90 N. East St., Pickerington.

Flower Sale Pickup

The PTO flower sale pickup will be on May 7, 2020 from 10:15am - 6:00pm in the Pickerington Elementary parking lot. It will be drive through only; you will stay in your car. Volunteers will practice physical distancing. Also, we will have a limited amount of extra baskets for sale. Cash Only.

Adult volunteers are also needed to help unload the truck, sort, and load cars. Any amount of time is appreciated. You may contact Lisa Winters with any questions at rlwinters2002@yahoo.com.

Student Belongings Pickup

Families may drive through the week of May 11 to receive items your child still had at school in March.

To limit everyone's exposure and to keep to the 6 foot social distancing guidelines, we ask that you try to only have one person, an adult, in the car picking up student belongings. No one will be getting out of cars, and no one is permitted in the school building. Before you get to the place where we hand you their belongings, someone will ask for your child/ren's name(s), grade level(s) and teacher's name(s). Those passing out student belongings will do so quickly through a window on the driver's side of your car, and won't spend time talking for the sake of everyone's health.

The days and times for drive through pickup are: Monday, May 11 from 9:00 - 10:30 am, 1:00 - 2:30 pm, 6:00 - 7:00 pm; Tuesday, May 12 from 9:00 - 10:00 am, 1:00 - 2:00 pm. We will collect any library books you have at home and classroom/baggie books. Please bring those with you and we will get the books back to either our media center or your child’s teacher. Clinic staff will also return medication that is still here at school. See "Clinic News" in this newsletter for additional information.

Instructional Coach Curriculum News

Dear Pickerngton Families,

The 2019 - 2020 school year is coming to an end. I really missed greeting students as they arrived each morning during my morning duty. I truly missed going into classrooms to model and co teach lessons. The students at Pickerington Elementary are the best!

Due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, there was a huge change in instruction for the 4th quarter. It’s not the way we had expected the year to end. But, kudos to all of the students for working so hard from home! Parents thanks for all of your at home support!!

Below are just a few curriculum reminders and updates for students.

  • Continue to do a great job with your i-Ready reading and i-Ready math online personalized lessons.

  • Continue your hard work on your Blizzard Bags.

  • Week 9 Blizzard Bags will have a variety of learning and enrichment lessons as well as summer learning opportunities.

Please stay safe!

Best,

Mrs. Horsford
