Quotation by Richard Stiggins
'You can't tell me that kids don't want to learn. Sometimes they don't want to learn the things that adults say they should...but once they begin to experience success, that target becomes a whole lot more attractive...We've got to find a way to turn them on to the possibilities. "
High-Impact Instruction by Jim Knight
The instructional coaches continue their book study on High- Impact Instruction. The topic of the chapter was formative assessments. Here is Knight's ideas of turning ideas into action:
- Involve students in identifying quality work. Give students examples of highly proficient work and ask them to identify the characteristics that produce highly proficient products. When students are actively involved in identifying the attributes of high-quality work, they are more likely to demonstrate that quality in their own work.
- Involve students in identifying methods of assessment. Explain that the goal is to ensure that everyone knows how well they are learning, and ask students for suggestions on how they would assess themselves.
- Ask students to assess the assessments. Prompt students to provide anonymous feedback on how well they understand their own progress and ask for suggestions for how assessments could be modified to produce more helpful information for them.
