Hansen Weekly Update
January 10, 2020
It's been a busy and exciting week of teaching and learning at the Hansen School! The weather has kept us indoors for recess in the morning and during a few afternoons, but as a reminder, we will get students outside for recess whenever possible and when it is safe to do so. With this in mind, please be sure your child is dressed for the elements of cooler temperatures and wind. This is very much appreciated!
This Week in our Technology Classroom...
Kindergarten is learning basic computer concepts, like sequencing, by exploring the BeeBots.
Third grade is learning that content posted online, such as selfies, leave an impression on others that affect the way they see you which may be good or bad.
Fourth grade is learning what makes computers a special type of machine and how they work. They’ve even had the chance to look inside a real desktop computer this week.
Fifth grade recently completed a coding project where they got to create their own dance routine. Real life examples include the JABBAWOCKEEZ dance group on the white board.
Grades 4/5 Winter Concert!
As a friendly reminder, our Winter Concert for 4th and 5th grade is next Tuesday, January 14! Please see the message below, along with the attachment at the bottom of the update, for an invitation to the 4th/5th grade Winter Concert. This is for any parent/guardian of a 4th/5th grade student currently participating in Strings, Band, Chorus, and/or Rolling Tones. We hope to see you there!
Dear 4th & 5th Grade Families:
Our 4th & 5th grade students have been working hard this year in Violin, Viola,
Cello, Band, Chorus, and the Rolling Tones - and we can’t wait to share what
we’ve been working on!
We will have a daytime concert to celebrate the achievements and efforts of our students.
Our concert will be TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 2020 @ 10 a.m. in the Hansen
Elementary cafeteria. The concert should last about 40 minutes. Please join us!
In order to present a uniform appearance and enable students to apply their
knowledge of performance etiquette, students in chorus and band are requested
to wear plain white/light colored shirts, black/dark colored pants or black/dark
colored long skirts, and flat, sturdy shoes to school on concert day. Rolling
Tones should wear black/dark on the bottom, Rolling Tones shirt on top!
We hope to see you at our concert! Please let me know if you have any
questions or concerns!
Thank you,
Daniel Hulsman

Hansen Community Forums are Back!
Last Spring, we held two initial 'community forums', inviting any adult member of the Hansen community to participate. We are excited to once again offer these opportunities to connect with each other, and our first forum is scheduled for January 30, 2020 at 3:00. Please see the note below for more information and an invitation to come and connect and have open dialogue with each other!
The Canton Public Schools believes in a set of core values that include Academic Excellence and Rigor, Inclusive and Engaged Community, Respectful and Responsible Relationships, and Continuous Reflection and Improvement. With these values in mind, the Hansen School is proud to begin to offer ongoing opportunities for the adult members of our school community (parents/guardians and staff) to come together in a comfortable and relaxed forum to connect with each other and discuss important topics related to equity, culture, and bias.
We have a wonderfully diverse student population at our school, and strive to maintain open communication with our community members so that we are able to grow our understanding and ability to meet the needs of students while promoting an equitable experience for all that walk through our doors each day.
These forums are not designed to be formal trainings, and there will be no ‘experts’ in the room. Rather, we hope to provide a comfortable way for each of us to have conversations with each other around topics that are often not discussed openly in this way. Any adult member of the Hansen community is welcome to join us, and we plan to meet approximately one time per month. Our first meeting for this school year is scheduled for Thursday, January 30, at 3:00 p.m. in the Hansen School Library. We very much hope to see you there, and look forward to engaging with you further around these important topics as we all work together to support all students at the Hansen School!
Should you have any thoughts or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Hansen staff members, David Brauninger at brauningerd@cantonma.org and/or Naomi Adagboyi at adagboyin@cantonma.org.
The Great Kindness Challenge is Coming!
Grade 5 Flashback
It is almost time for our 5th Grade Flashback! If you are not familiar with this Hansen tradition, our Grade 5 students and staff perform lip syncs and dances to songs from the past decades, with all money raised going towards their end of year class trip to Camp Wing. It is super fun, and we have performances scheduled for Wednesday, February 5 at 3:45, Thursday, February 6 at 7:00, and an in-school performance for students and staff only on Friday, February 7. Please see the message below with some more information along with opportunities for parents/guardians to volunteer!
Hi 5th grade families,
I am sure your child has been busy preparing for the Flashback. It will be here before we know it!
Parental help is needed in a variety of ways. If you have a high schooler and/or a middle schooler that is willing to help as well, then recruit them too.
Contact me at 5thgradehansen@gmail.com with any questions you may have regarding volunteering for the Flashback. I thank you in advance for your help.
Best,
Cynthia De Vito
