Ham-Par Happenings
February Volume 44/Issue 6
Mrs. Hasse's Spotlight
In some ways it feels like we just began the school year. But, here we are....February! With half of the year over with, it is imperative that I check in and have you reflect on growth mindset. As a staff we are still on our course to read and synthesize the material. There is so much that could fill our time in staff meetings, but we find it critical to embrace and model this for your children. Why? Well it's quite simple: our children need this NOW MORE THAN EVER!
Have you witnessed someone (or even with your own children) who is struggling with making mistakes? Do they have anxiety that things are not "perfect" or the way they thought it should be? I am hearing more and more about this crisis happening with our children. Even though this can seem alarming there is good news; something we can do about it!
One of the most powerful ways that parents can model the growth mindset is by being willing to fail themselves and eager to learn from setbacks. When parents talk positively about the mistakes they make, or the mistakes their kids make, their children start to think of mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.
Effort over achievement is always the goal! Don't let your child feel ashamed to ask for help. As parents we can model: through our talk, actions, and expectations to instill this type of mindset in your child(ren) so that we can ensure their future success. For example, instead of saying "your smart at this" (fixed mindset) help them be more resilient (growth mindset). Celebrate the time and energy that is put into something. Our brain grows; like a muscle! Our abilities in school are developed! You are not born into knowing how to do something or being great automatically. Effort = achievement. And remind them, it takes practice and exposure/rehearsal over and over.
So, this Valentine's Day (and every day) continue to model how to stay calm, how to learn from mistakes, talk through problems, and flexible thinking. Now that's love and wanting the best for them. It's ok to not be there...YET! With some practice and time, anything is possible!
IRIP: Individual Reading Improvement Plan
The Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) is a tool designed to document a variety of information such as the student's level of reading proficiency, the evidence-based interventions that will be used to help the student improve, diagnostic data, and ideas for home support.
We focus on the following components of literacy:
- Phonemic Awareness: Ability to hear and distinguish sounds.
- Phonics: Ability to understand relationship between letters & sounds they represent.
- Fluency: Ability to read with sufficient speed to support understanding.
- Vocabulary/Oral Language: Knowledge of, and memory for, word meanings.
- Comprehension: Ability to understand and draw meaning from text.
*Teachers will be notifying parents if their child qualifies for an IRIP by February 13th. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.

Student Leadership!
On February 14th, there is a holiday. This holiday is called Valentine’s Day. We celebrate this holiday at school with candy and a party. It is also called Saint Valentine’s Day. You can wear pink or red if you want to.
Did you know that 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold across the country. SOLD OUT!!! Another surprising fact is that Valentine’s Day is the second-largest card-giving day of the year, just after Christmas. Teachers receive the most cards so get ready teachers, here comes the cards!!! It’s estimated that the U.S. will spend 3.3 billion this year. The only day that beats Valentine’s Day in floral (flowers) sales is Mother’s Day.
