Eighth Grade Newsletter
March 23, 2014
The first day of Spring Break is Friday, March 28. School resumes Tuesday, April 8.
Students should have a Holocaust related book (fiction or non-fiction) that they are reading outside of class. I have asked them to be finished with the book by Monday, when we will have our final book discussion groups. This week we will be focused on writing research papers from the notes they have been taking. Students can access all the information in my iTunes U course. You can access it on an iPad by clicking here: https://itunesu.itunes.apple.com/audit/COEE3X8ZK5 or finding the Charlevoix Public Schools listing in the iTunes U app.
Research papers are due Thursday, March 27.
As we wind things down before spring break, and get things going for the fourth quarter of the year, our studies our taking us into the time period of the 1840s and 1850s. It's our big push before learning about the Civil War and then heading off to Washington, DC.
As always, please keep checking your teacher's Edmodo class page for more details.
The Middle School Band will be hosting the first annual Middle School Massed Band on Tuesday, March 25. Bands from Charlevoix County will be arriving at Charlevoix Middle High School at 8:30 A.M. Each band will perform two numbers for their peers. After this is finished, all the bands will come together on stage at the auditorium and they will practice together three songs that each band has been working on for the past weeks. Each section will have the opportunity to meet for a master class with a specialist in their instrument field during the day. At 1:30 we will perform the numbers we have been working on together for anyone that wants to stop by and listen to the group perform! At approximately 1:45, we will be finishing and the visiting bands will prepare to leave so they can be back for the release of their schools at the end of their school day. This event is being held to bring students together in a non-competitive environment for a day of learning on their instruments that is very unique. Any Charlevoix band student that needs to use this time to work on their school work is surely welcome to stay in their classrooms to catch up on work they may have missing!
Washington DC Trip
We will do A LOT of walking on the DC trip. If you are planning to buy new shoes for the trip, now is a good time to get them broken in so we can avoid blisters.
You should receive a letter this week indicating the amount of spending money held in your child's account. Checks will be issued just after Spring Break. I have requested that overpayments to Worldstrides be reimbursed before the trip.
The last day to turn in Oleson's slips for 8th graders is Thursday, March 27.
Mark your calendars for a parent meeting regarding the trip on Tuesday, April 29.
