Homegrown Institute for Writing Summer 2019
The staff developers from the Teachers College will be back for another four days of learning about writing this summer. The district is working with TC to determine the week for the institute. Teachers who have not attended a Homegrown Institute will have the opportunity to attend; this includes K-5, SpEd, and ESOL. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to let me know. As of January 28th, we do not have a week for our learning, however, we have requested the following weeks:
- July 25

- June 10.

Dear CDC Healthy Schools Partner,
We’d like your help! On January 28, 2019, we will launch a weeklong social media hashtag campaign on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to increase awareness of the impact school health programs have in schools and school districts across the United States.
We’re inviting you and all our partners to participate during the week of the campaign by creating social media posts to answer the question,“What does a healthy school look like to you?”
We encourage creativity! Your post can take the form of a video, photo, graphic, or text, and you can post on any or all of your social media channels.
We just ask one thing: please use the hashtag #CDCHealthySchools in your posts.
During the campaign, we’ll be posting, too. We’d love for you to look out for our posts and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and the other social media platforms (@CDCChronic and @CDC_eHealth) and then share, like, and comment on them!
As part of the campaign, we are also launching our CDC Healthy Schools Video Series that we’re very excited about. These videos feature the successes of our former grantees from North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. You will be able to access the videos from our CDC Healthy Schools website at https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/stateprograms.htm.
Thank you in advance for your support of our campaign, as well as the health and wellbeing of all students.

Tips for Units of Study
- For pacing, schedule reading and writing celebrations first, put them on the calendar at the beginning of the year and invite others to attend
- For planning, each person on a PLC plans an upcoming lesson and rehearses it in front of the team (i.e., 1 person takes Monday's lesson, another Tuesday's lesson, etc.)
- For conferring, focus on the strategies you have been teaching the students until now; they know the language, have access to the anchor charts, and can apply it in a new text/piece
- For data, quickly Thin-Slice data (ask your coach for details) and create teaching points for each group of students
