Prestwick LEarns: Tips for Kids Who May Be Becoming Less Productiive During At Home Learning
This weeks topic focuses on what to do when children are refusing to work. Refusal to work can span a wide range. This can include crying, taking a prolonged time working, procrastinating or maybe verbal refusal. We recognize this can be very frustrating so step number 1 is to establish what could be the reason. The best way to know this is to ask your child to tell you what is going on. Is the work frustrating? Are they feeling tired or overwhelmed? Are they hoping to take a break? Is the current work station in an area that does not work best for them? The truth is their worlds have blurred just as ours have. The place for cool down and unwind has quickly become the "work space." Their repsonse can give you great insight that you can share with your child's teacher. Please reach out to us - we are your partners from afar and will work with you through this.
In the meantime here are some great tips:
- Allow for breaks - subject area work should be no more than 25-35 minutes each.
- Use a first - next - then or first-then chart - see pictures but write or draw the "work" they need to complete and allow them to choose a "then" preferred activity. Be sure to follow through and as soon as they complete the task they get their preferred activity for a set period of time.
- Get your child some teacher time - log into the class zoom or set a time with your child and teacher to trouble shoot. Sometimes they need another voice
- Remember Mrs. Burrell is also available to support students with counseling needs during this time. Simply email or give our main office a call
- See our chart for plenty of other ideas. Notice that if you are in a power struggle both of you need a break! Please take care of yourselves too - self care matters
Keep up the great work - our students are doing outstanding work and we know that is due to your support at home.
This week we are offering a coffee with the Principal. We are happy to provide end of year information which has been established, answer questions and simply be available for open communication. Please RSVP to join our zoom meeting. We will record and share as well.
