A Dash of Salt - Motivation

  • Does your frustration cause you to yell, scream, beg, punish, and throw your hands up in despair?

  • Does your helplessness cause you to start fighting with your spouse, who never seems to do as much as you think they should do to get your child motivated?

  • Does your fear about your child’s underachieving cause you to keep trying to get him to change and to be more motivated?

How do you inspire your kids to motivate themselves? Whether it’s doing the dishes, completing assignments, or raising that grade point? In this week's episode, I'll share six tips that will make motivation a bit easier for you.

New COVID-19 Reporting Procedure

(NEW) Process for Parents to Report a Positive Student COVID-19 Case
Please use the highlighted link below to report a positive student's COVID-19 case. The case needs to be reported on the form by the parent/guardian of a student with a positive COVID-19 case.

BAS COVID-19 Positive Case Reporting Form

Do Not Send Your Child to School If...

Spencer has recently received an increase in positive COVID cases. You can help keep all safe with a few easy steps:

If your child has any illness symptoms such as,

  • Fever over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Other early symptoms, including chills, body aches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, headache, diarrhea, and nausea/ vomiting.

Stay home!

In addition, if someone in your household has recently been tested for COVID-19 and awaiting the results, we ask that you keep everyone home until the results are in.

Note from the Attendance Secretary

Calling in to the Attendance Line

Please call in your student's absence to the Attendance Line every day they are absent from school. You can communicate your student's absence to the teacher, but you must also call into the Attendance Line. The number is 810-299-4354. Give a brief reason why they are absent, whether it be a vacation or if they are ill. If your student is ill, please provide a brief description of their symptoms, especially if they are Covid-19 symptoms. If you went to the doctor and turn in a doctor’s note, I can medically excuse the absence. If you do not call in your student's absence, a Robocall goes out around 3 PM. If you receive the robocall, that means your student has an unexcused absence and it will remain that way until you call in to the Attendance Line stating a reason for the absence.

Jostens Yearbook

January 28th is the last day to GUARANTEE a yearbook, as well as the last chance to order a personalized book. Order your yearbook SOON if you haven't done so already!

MASKS ARE NEEDED ON THE BUS!

If your student only rides the bus in the afternoon, please remember to send a mask in with them. We are seeing an increase in kids coming in to the office at the end of the day to get a mask because one was forgotten, and our supply of extra masks is running low.

Teacher Wish Lists

It's a new year and our teachers could use some fresh supplies! We have collected Wish List items from teachers and staff. If you are willing to donate items, please sign up and send them in with your student(s) when you get a chance! We will be leaving this sign-up live for a while. You can view the sign-ups here. Please note: due to the large number of items/staff, I have broken the lists out into individual grade levels, Support Staff, and Specials. You should be able to view a tab for each level - on a mobile device, it may show up as a drop down menu. Thank you for continuing to show our staff that we appreciate all they do!

Sleds

Last week, the PTO purchased 10 new sleds for recess, all of which were destroyed before the last lunch of the day. The Gibson Family generously has donated another 15 sleds for the students to use at recess. Please take a moment to remind your students to be respectful of school equipment so ALL the children get a chance to use them!

Family Game Night scheduled for January 26th has been canceled.

As always, please check out our Facebook page and/or website for the most up to date information this year.

Virtual Library/STEAM Activities for Home!

Hi Roadrunner Families,

Many of our students have asked if they can do our library activities at home, and the answer is YES! I create virtual choice boards each month for the students, and they are located on our Library website, along with other activities that we do during their Library/STEAM time each week. If you'd like them to explore at home, you can get to the Library website through the Spencer Elementary website under quick links or directly at http://spencerlsc.weebly.com/library-activities.html. Enjoy!

Note From the Counselor

Counselor Corner!

Happy New Year from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! We hope you had a well rested, and memory filled, time with your loved ones. For the month of January we are diving into mindfulness, yoga, and other practices that treat the mind, body, and soul. The goal of these lessons is to promote self-regulation and self-reflection in our young learners, as well as to practice a sense of peace and calm during our days.

Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.

More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
